Re: Tele Or Strat?

Squier strats are always a great deal. I got this one for $150 and feels just as solid as my American Standard.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Thanks every one for your input so far. I just found out guitar center is having a sale for the nex 2 days so i might stop in an se if i can pick sumtin up for the low.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

I play and love both, but I feel the strat wins out over the Tele just in it's versatility...

Me too. Got a great Tele and also a great Strat. I play the Strat a lot more often. Of course, my Strat has a Custom Tele bridge pickup that Seymour and MJ wound for me! :)

This is usually my answer in these types of threads. You aren't going to find the answer by asking a hundred guys who all play different styles. They already made up their mind, or own it all.

Sometimes, you've got to dedicate a weekend or whole week to playing dozens of guitars until you find one that makes you pull your wallet out. I usually only buy guitars that make my mind race......the ones where there's no question. Most guitars I've bought were the result of playing something and being totally blown away. Whether I bought it new on the spot, or found an identical used one is a different story. But it's because I didn't come at it from a preconceived notion based on forum suggestions.

Oh yeah, and it doesn't have to be a strat or tele.....or Gibson (my usual choices). Every once in awhile, I test drive something out of the norm and am astonished that I'd never considered it before. Go play some guitars.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

If you could only have one guitar it should probably be an HSS strat. But if you have more than one guitar have one of each, for each purpose. You need a traditional strat, a hard tail strat, an strat with some kind of an improved bridge pickup. If you already have a strat get a tele. You may eventually want a traditional tele, an esquire, a nashville tele, and an H H tele. Maybe even a Tele with Gibson/PRS woods. You should probably have a Gibson too, if you like the short scale length.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

It's a really tough choice. They're both part of the same family and have a similar vibe to an outsider, but just like any family, hang out with them enough and you'll start seeing the not so subtle differences.

I personally prefer a Stratocaster because I feel like it's the cooler, faster, young sister. It's sleeker and it fits my body real nice. The Tele's a bit like the older, more unforgiving and no nonsense older sister. Bit rougher around the edges, but just as fun. The Strat opens up more alleys for sonic exploration, specially with the vibrato and the extra pickup positions, but I find most players don't really take advantage of that so it'd be almost the same if they played a Tele. I like the Strat's neck pickup way more, but I like the Tele's bridge pickup way more too. If you've already owned a Strat and had it for a while, then try seeing if someone can lend you a Tele for a couple of days and give it a shot.

I just love the Strat. It's like a spaceship with hot rod cues. The Tele's more like a utilitarian slab of wood. Both have pleased generations of badass guitar players.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Always used to be a strat guy and always said i wouldn't play a tele as i can't stand the look of it. when i tried one i understood why it was liked so much. A lovely clean sound and also can be played for rock/hard rock. also alternative music such a paramore and stuff. (:
i voted tele as it's a lot more versatille

+1. A lot of local players I know have been lured in by the three PU's on a SSS Strat, but once they have it, they only use two PU's as the bridge is too bright and piercing for them. The assumed advantage of more tone combinations often fades.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

I have a Strat, and I agree it's more versatile, but there's something really cool about the feel and sound of a Tele. Gotta get one, one of these days I think.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

I voted strat. But I love teles. I know so many guys who get the most awesome sounds out of them. But even with their amps, I just can't seem to get a good tone from a tele. It must have something to do with my attack of the strings. So I have to default to strat, because I can get them to work. But if you ask me "best strat sound" by someone else v. "best tele sound", I would probably pick tele.

There was a time where I thought the Tele was only for country style stuff..I also swore I'd never own one...As I got better as a player though,I bought one, loved it,and then bought another...One is a rosewood necked 62 Tele Custom reissue...The other is a maple necked 94 American Std.Tele with a modern saddled bridge..I prefer the 62 reissue though..Alot can be done on a Tele's bridge pickup and using the volume and tone controls..

Re: Tele Or Strat?

Spent years playing strats and then finally realized that I was a telecaster guy all along. The telecaster just does what I want it to. There's simplicity, I don't need lots of knobs and switch positions - I just want 3 really good sounds and it does it. The bridge pickup tone is infinitely more useful on a tele than ANY strat I've ever played, the middle position sounds better than any notch or standalone middle pickup strat position I've heard and with a good neck pickup, you can rival the sweet strat neck sounds. I hated how the trem always got in the way and I could never use it effectively, so the simple ashtray tele bridges appeal a lot more to me. The one thing I did like about the strat was the double cutaway, but honestly, accessibility hasn't been as big of a problem as I thought it would be with the tele.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

I voted for the Strat, but you know, only Teles can rip your head off.

Strats can't do that. Neither can Less Pauls.

Re: Tele Or Strat?

There are two guitars that demand that you play the sh*t out of them - the Les Paul Junior and the Telecaster.
