Tele project- advice on pots and wiring

Hi, first thread here, and currently completing my first guitar build :)

I'm building a fat thinline tele, two pickups- an STL-2 Hot Tele Bridge and an SH-2N Jazz Neck. The guitar will have two pots and a selector switch.

Looking online at the various options, i'm going to go for 500k volume pot, and put in a resistor so the single coil sees it as a lower value. Would the tone pot also be 500k, or need any modification?

Also, any other suggestions or good links for this combination of pickups would be appreciated

welcome to the forum!

personally i might get the tapped version of the stl-2 for a little more variation if you want a thinner/brighter tone. pots are cheap and tone is subjective. if it was me, id start with a 500k tone pot and see what you think. using the resister to tame the treble on the bridge pup volume pot is a fine idea and should give you some great tones

Re: Tele project- advice on pots and wiring

A 250k no load tone pot works fantastic because it gives you some edge on 10 if you need it and you notice a darkening as soon as you turn it down to 9. Which makes the whole sweep usable. Instead of having to turn a 500k pot down to 5 or 6 to notice anything.

Re: Tele project- advice on pots and wiring

No reason to complicate the wiring because you are worried about the single coil going through 500K pots. Firstly, the hot Tele pickup might actually benefit from the 500K pot. Secondly, you can always turn treble down if it's there, but you can't add it if it is not there. What I would do, however, is give each pickup an independent tone control: VTT instead of VT. I would really dislike having a Jazz neck and a hot Tele bridge on the same tone control (as I dislike any master tone controls on a multi pickup guitar).

Or you can add the tone pot to the bridge pickup only - I've got a few guitars like that.....especially Tele's, where it seems they are more tonally mismatched (even stock) than anything else

I am a 500k pot fan in this case.

Re: Tele project- advice on pots and wiring

I'd go with 500k for both pots. You can always turn the tone down from 10, but you can't turn it up from 10. Possibly even have a 500k p/p tone pot with the p/p wired as a tone bypass.
