Tele pu's vs Strat pu;s, vs other single coils.

I s'pose this is the best forum to ask this question.

We all know that a Tele sounds like a Tele, and not like a Strat.
Likewise, a Strat sounds like a strat, and not like a Tele.

BUT . . . how would their respective bridge pick ups sound in a completely diff guitar body ?

If you would use one of these adaptor rings, in a semi or full hollow guitar, how much of that Tele or Strat tone will you still hear in the new body ?

Will a Tele pu still have some Tele characteristics in a full hollow, (see below images) and how much ? And will a Strat pu still sound Strat-like in the same full hollow, or will the new body completely transform their distinctive tones ?

What do you think ?

I don't think the original tone would transfer to well... different scale lengths, different placement of the pickup and you don't have a giant ash tray bridge attached to the pickup... maybe I'm wrong... that's just my take on it...

Re: Tele pu's vs Strat pu;s, vs other single coils.

My first thought would be that they would carry some of the same characteristics with them, but they won't sound exactly the same. If the guitars are different woods, that will change the sound. Especially the fact that teles and strats are solid guitars, whereas you are wanting to try them in a semi hollow. I think the sound will be really unique if you do decide to try it, but the pickups won't sound the exact same as they would in their respective instruments

Re: Tele pu's vs Strat pu;s, vs other single coils.

Think of it the other way around... Do humbuckers make strats sound like LPs? Not IME.

Re: Tele pu's vs Strat pu;s, vs other single coils.

The telecaster pickup needs to be in a telecaster bridge to sound right. The strat bridge will be very underpowered compared to the neck humbucker, and will sound bright. I think you would have the best luck putting a strat pickup in the neck of that guitar. Of course, you would want to change the pots to 250k as for the single coil as well . . .

It won't sound exactly like a strat, but you'll probably get a decent single coil sound out of it.

Then we had very diff experiences ;)

I nearly bought a used BlackTop Strat once, because it sounded A LOT more like a Les Paul than any traditional style S/S/S Strat that i have ever heard.

And they kinda look good too - for a Strat :laugh2:

I LOVE my Blacktop Strat. I think the pups in it are excellent. With my amps, the neck pup position is kinda LP-ish, but the bridge pup is pure super strat like a JB with a slightly lower fz resonant peak. You still have the extra snap of a 25.5 inch scale thing going on.

The inside/outside coils in parallel are fantastic, too. Tele middle position and a Parker middle position sound. But I have the maple fingerboard BT Strat...

Back OT, scale length and construction make a big difference in tone. I tried a Twangbanger and P90s in a 24.75 inch scale Jackson once. It went back to SSH.

You said it yourself....a lot more like a LP than a SSS strat........not exactly like a LP......not the same thing in the least, and simply proves the previous post correct.

The tele sounds like it does due to the bridge and the construction. You can make a strat sound more tele like with a Twangbanger, but its not the same.

If you want a singlecoil like tone from a semihollow, try a humbucker sized p90 with rod magnets.

Thanks for the info . . . but i am specifically referring to Strat & Tele bridge pick ups.

This is to try and discover just how much of their original tone will be recognizable in a hollow body guitar . . . if any at all.

Re: Tele pu's vs Strat pu;s, vs other single coils.

Some tele players say tele neck pickup is great for jazz. So one day I put a tele neck pickup in my hollow guitar project. What PushedCrayon said describes my experience. And I also notice that the pickup play fairly more role than the specs of this particular guitar (mahogany body and neck, rosewood fretboard, 25.5" scale length). I use Keystones which sounds quite stratty. It still sounds like Keystones in a tele: clear and articulate. The hollow body gives overtone and subdued high to the brightness of Keystones. Both my tele and jazzbox have flatwound strings. I was worried using regular tele neck pickup would make it sounds really dark. But I have a plan to replace it with APTR-1 just for experiment. I have no idea about tele/strat bridge in hollow body/archtop/jazzbox. I won't hesitate to try it though if I have dedicated mounting ring. Sorry for crappy phone pic.

Thank you . . . great info, and very nice guitar !

Re: Tele pu's vs Strat pu;s, vs other single coils.

^ I'd say a strat pickup and a tele neck would....not sure about the tele bridge, as the mounting is also a contributor to its tone. In the pic of that nice jazz box above, the pickup is mounting in a very similar way to the tele method. However the bridge version will not only be in a different guitar, but also be no longer mounted with the ashtray bridge. You might find that drops it back to 60%

Point well taken !

I can handle/except 60% ;)

Re: Tele pu's vs Strat pu;s, vs other single coils.

Give it a go......even if it doesn't sound tele, you might well find it sounds better!!

^^^^^^^^What he said!!!!^^^^^^^^ If you were to drop Tele pup's in that thing they might sound like Tele-ish but not very good!!! I guess a strat pickup in one of those rings would sound alright but not like a REAL Stratocaster? I've done the Strat pickup ring thing before & it act. sounded more like a P-90/Jaguar hybrid pickup but that was in a very different guitar, a Mahogany S.G. with a set neck witch is inherently dark, I don't know about a semi hollow/hollow body though???? I think the acoustics of the guitar may leave you with a pretty noisy, Snap Crackle, Pop, kind of guitar, then again you won't know unless you try????
