Tele Tuning Issue With Capo

Re: Tele Tuning Issue With Capo

So the Shubb came in and doesn't even fit my Tele...

So I think I've found the problem–my Tele has a very thick/fat neck profile. I think all of the capos are just squeezing too hard. I see offerings for capos for thicker necks so I think that is what I need to try.

There are different Shubbs. I have several Shubbs: 7-9" radius, flat wide for classical (but works on shred sticks and other electrics) and 12-string which is about 9-12" radius and wide. I also have one with a wheel for pressure that only fits thin necks and others with a plastic/rubber point that fits thicker necks. FWIW - I have used all of these on my Tele no problem. The 7-9" radius with the plastic point (not the wheel) fits best.

Try the Planet Waves model I posted the link to. 2 of my necks are Warmoth boatnecks. 1" thick the entire length. That capo fits em fine.

That is what I need–thanks!

I noticed that after I tried out the capo and it didn't work... :smash: lol

I like the concept of the Schubb–I will try it on another guitar. I like how the Kyser and G7th can be changed up or down quickly but this one looks like it will be a better capo....if I can find a guitar neck thin enough for it ;)

Re: Tele Tuning Issue With Capo

I've used Kyser's for years with no problem. It's all about placement.

Sorry, just saw this.

I've used Kysers for years as well–but the problem is not placement it is thickness. I can barely get the Kyser on this Tele–around an inch thick neck (see ErikH's post below)

Re: Tele Tuning Issue With Capo

It has nothing to do with that.....the capo is pushing the strings too hard.

+1 to that.

Intonation gets distorted also if there is too much arc relief and the nut is too high, or if you have huge chunky frets and ultra-light strings.

A trick I pull with my Shubb is to turn the neoprene pad around so that the round side faces the strings. Then use only just enough pressure to stop the string rattling against the fret. That way you are mimicking a finger. On my Jim Dunlops I've shaved the sides of the pad to form a chamfer.

Re: Tele Tuning Issue With Capo

I'll agree that the Kyser is more difficult to get sounding right with thicker necks. I like the G7th, but I hate that when I capo on higher frets and bend, the strings don't return back to their normal resting place (so bending I have to be conscientious about where I let go of a string). I liked the Dunlop Trigger Capo, but it doesn't feel as secure as the Kyser or the G7. I've never tried the Shubb, but it sounds like I should. I like the website and they look pretty slick!

Wow, you can bend strings with a Kyser on? I can't get the strings to move with a Kyser.
