Tele with S1 switching and push/pull coil tap?

Teletele

New member
Hi all I am new to the forum but have found it a great resource so thanks. Normally I have been able to find the information I need but today I have a question...

I play a new Tele Deluxe and have fitted it with a Seymour Duncan little 59 in the bridge in series with no coil tap and love it but find there is no balance with the original Tele neck pick-up, to fix this problem I am going to fit a STHR-1n. It’s clear I’m looking for a beefy sound but would like to have some of the original tele tone so I am going to fit a push / pull coil tap to tap both humbuckers , I found a great post on this forum detailing how to do this... https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=169806

This is great but I got to thinking my Tele has Fenders S1 switching on the volume pot which when in position 2 on the toggle and the switch pressed in puts the pickups in series (I think)... Has anyone attempted to do the following:

With the little 59 and sthr-1n fitted, fit a push-pull tone pot to split the coils and wire the S1 vol pot to be able to put the pickups in series and parallel?

I’m ok with the coil tap part thanks to the mentioned thread put I cannot figure out how the S1 is wired or works to be able to uses to put the pickups in series & parallel can any help me with this. Should be a pretty cool guitar when complete.

Thanks.
Allan Ireland.

I don't know if you would be interested in this but here is an opinion. Use a 4 way tele switch and 2PPs (one for vol and one for tone, individual coil splits). Follow this diagram

Red&white goes in to the PPs. Standard coil splitting.

Unfortunately I have not experience with S1 and I can not help you there. But this will be more versatile wiring.

Edit: Welcome to the forum.

Re: Tele with S1 switching and push/pull coil tap?

I happen to have the same Guitar (actually, it belongs to my step-Daughter) Being a $1300 guitar that doesn't actually belong to me. I have not peeked under the hood yet to see how the S-1 switch works. But from looking a diagrams it appears the S-1 has the bridge & Neck wired in parallel ? And I imagine the neck PuP is RW/RP ? All I can say is w/t both PuPs on w/t S-1 switch down, It sounds like a Full humbucker ! (Not a hum cancel like in a strat notch position. All I know about it, Is that the PuPs & the S-1 system was supposedly designed by Bill Lawrence . If you not happy w/t the stock PuPs? I imagine you could get a premium for the S-1 system selling it on ebay? And then buy what ever PuPs & switches you want with the proceeds.?:scratchch

Re: Tele with S1 switching and push/pull coil tap?

Thanks for the new perspective here hermetico, I didn’t think of a 4 way switch... Very interesting!
Given I have the 3 way already in there and the S1 Vol Pot I would like to use these if I could but going to think about this a while before i go ahead with the mod...

Thanks again for the great post and diagram.

Yup, no issues.

Log where every wire of your pickups is currently in your wiring.
Just wire black (of each humbucker) where the original hot (probably white) was in the S-1 or blade switch or pot.
Then wire green where the original ground was in the S-1 or grounding point.

For the pull push, solder together red&white of each pickup in each center lug of the pull/push.
jump together the upper two lugs of the p/p and ground them.

you are done

Ya i think you got it kmcguitars...

With the toggle in position 2 and the S1 button pressed it sounds like the neck and bridge pickups are put in series forming a humbuker of sorts??? The tone is big but not hot enough for me thus the little 59... I have a delux strat also and i love the s1 set up in it having 3 pickups and the 5 way switch. going to keep anything i take out of this guitar in case i want to go be to the original config some day... Mine cost €1200

hermrtico I'm going to go with this the neck pick up and push pull pot are on order from Germany should have them by early next week and will fit it and do the mod soon after will let you know how it turns out...

Thanks very much every body for this help.

Re: Tele with S1 switching and push/pull coil tap?

Any opinions on the little 59 (bridge) and STHR-1n (neck) combo???

Re: Tele with S1 switching and push/pull coil tap?

I have a STHRb/n combo. I can vouch for the STHR neck. It is a real thick, beefy and full sounding pup. I am sure it will sound great with little 59 too.
