Tele wood. Alder Vs. Swamp Ash w/Maple neck

Re: Tele wood. Alder Vs. Swamp Ash w/Maple neck

You believe anything Ed Roman says?

Nope. Dave Suhr talks of it as though it is God's gift to mankind. I'd say I'm biased towards negative information.

Dave Suhr also likes basswood, which I despise.

Ed Roman thinks Korina is wonderful, but based on what I've learned about it, it doesn't sound like I'd like it.

I meant to post that in another thread.

I just read the Harmony Central reviews on the Ritchie Blackmore signature strat. The REAL signature strat that was only issued for one year in Japan. It had a set 'C' neck and an ash body!

Compared to alder, swamp ash has sweeter, prettier, mids, tighter lows, and more high end sparkle. On a tele it also has more twang. Swamp ash is one wood that works well for cleans and dirt both. Maple necks work great with swamp ash. It's usually bright, but in the good way and not ear piercing.

A lot of northern heavy ash CBS Fenders (weighing 13 lb's) were produced during the 70's. I can say that the worst sounding Tele I have ever played was a northern ash model from about 72. Just terrible. Now swamp ash teles are a different animal. "Swamp ash for teles and alder for strats" is a popular rule of thumb. I do however own a great swamp ash strat.

Nobody uses northern ash in an American made guitar - if anybody does it's on those Korean junk jobs that I doubt the OP is even considering.

Not all swamp ash is created equal. If it hasn't soaked long enough it will give you harsh high end.

Really? So my American Tele is Swamp Ash?

Ouch. That's more than some Custom LPs.

You ain't kidding! I joke around at how effective it could for home defense. It is like a monolithic slab ... It really sounds nice though once I got the right pups in there..... Not sure if I buy that Northern Ash isn't used in quality or American Instruments.... It is temperamental but can be tamed and it sustains better than my Alder Strats.
