Telecaster neck humbucker

Hi guys, I own a Telecaster Custom on which I installed a Gibson Classic 57 humbucker in the neck position. It sounds a bit muddy. My guitar is equipped with 500k tone and volume pots.
What would be a good replacement in the SD family in order to get more clarity and less muddiness?

First pickup that comes to mind with your description is the SH-2 Jazz, it was especially made to do exactly what you describe!

Welcome to the Forum!

I'd opt for an Antiquity or a Jazz, as neither of those could never be considered muddy at all. The Jazz has more clarity than the Antiquity, but both are great pickups.

Re: Telecaster neck humbucker

I've used a Jazz for that in the past and it has worked well enough. I have a mini humbucker in the neck position of my thinline and I prefer that to anything else.

Re: Telecaster neck humbucker

I went with an A2Pro on mine, wired for series/parallel/split. Wonderful sounds both with clean and gain. Parallel is really, really clear, with no hum.

Re: Telecaster neck humbucker

I forgot to tell you that the circuit has 500k tone and volume pots AND a resistor in parallel for the Fralin single coil bridge pickup in order for it to see 250k.

I'll suggest a Pearly Gates - very classic PAF style tones, and the EQ is tilted all the right way for less mud/bass and treble cut. The Jazz will be clear as a bell, but is a modern sounding pup. Either will work great depending on your taste.

Me too. The PGn is my favorite Duncan neck humbucker.

I also use Seth Lovers, 59s and Antiquitys, but the PGn is my fave.

Re: Telecaster neck humbucker

A neck humbucker is almost always more bassy and a lot louder than a bridge single coil.

Always been a challenge for me adjusting an amp's tone controls for getting a fat tone from the bridge single coil without that setting making the neck humbucker too bassy...or muddy.

Works for Keith Richards. Never quite worked for me. Of course Keith has no low E string to contend with.
