Telecaster pickups help

I was recently given a fender telecaster modern player with no electronics or pickups. It's unusual with HSS pickup options. I've currently I'm thinking of a hot rails in the neck and mini JB in the middle position (big Dave Murray fan) but I'm struggling to choose a humbucker for the bridge that would fit well with these choices. I mainly play prog/rock in either standard or 1&1/2 steps down. Anyone have experience with these choices of pickups that could recommend a bridge humbucker? Oh the body is made of pine apparently.

welcome to the forum!

there are a lot of options that would work. what rig do you play through?

Re: Telecaster pickups help

Standard bridge humbuckers for rock would be the Custom 5, Distortion, or JB. Why don't you listen to those and tell us where you want to go from there.

Welcome to the forum.... My 2 cents, I'd take Clint's suggestions & perhaps add a Pegasus & Dimebucker to the list? As far as the Pine body of your Tele goes there's not a whole lot of tonal differences between it & Alder, it's perhaps a bit brighter but that's a almost beneficial characteristic in a Tele? Pinecasters done right kinda kick a$$ IMHO....

The main difference is just overall durability. It will ding up easy but they sound fantastic & you can always try to be careful so really who cares? I had a Modern Player Marauder that I absolutely loved!!! It was probably the best "Bang For Your Buck Guitar" I've ever bought & I really regret getting rid of it now! That had a Koto body which is just Chinese Pine & it was super a resonant guitar! I tried a few different puppies in the bridge but in the end I settled on TB-14 Custom 5. The Pegasus was definitely a close second which is why I mentioned it & so was the regular TB-5 Custom. To be honest I thought it was great for dropped tuned stuff with all of the above...

I've never tried a dimebucker, I've heard they have really hot output?? Has anyone tried the alternative8 humbucker? I currently have a pegasus & sentient in a old Japan Jackson from 1999 I rebuilt, so would rather something different but similar. My current rig is a burgera g20 valve amp. Which is a perfect clone of the blackstar studio 20 (at less than half the price)

Re: Telecaster pickups help

I'd go with a JB myself, but I'm not that familiar with humbuckers in Teles. Still, it seems to be a good match for most guitars that just need a little pump up.

Re: Telecaster pickups help

Are you playing traditional prog, or prog metal? They would be a different set of pickups. Also, do you want it to sound like a Tele? When I think of traditional prog on a Tele, I think of Steve Howe, on Relayer. He really rips up a Tele (with a PAF in the neck) on that.

Re: Telecaster pickups help

Dimebucker would be awesome–the name really does a disservice to it. Very clear and articulate (perfect for Chicken Picking) even with loads of gain, great harmonics, and would pair well with a Hotrails in the neck.

JB would be another great choice.
