Telecaster Static

OK - I've dealt with this before - :smack: here's the deal: when the neck pickup is on an area of the guard produces static crackle when I brush it with a finger. I rub the area with a dryer sheet & that does two things: it makes the crackle go away for a while & makes the guitar smell really nice. Then the crackle comes back Any way to eliminate it permanently? By the way it's an American Standard Tele powered by Antiquity pickups. Thanks & happy new year to all!

Re: Telecaster Static

I don't think there's a way to eliminate it permanantly. Maybe.

That statc thing seems to originate with certain types of plastic pickguard materials.

Maybe switching to a bakelite pickguard would help.

Re: Telecaster Static

Sounds to me like a you need to ground your pickguard. If your pickguard doesn't have a foil backing, it's a good idea to do so. Aluminum foil works fine. Just trace it out and cut it a bit smaller than the pickguard, but large enough to cover the screwholes. I use a gluestick to secure it to the pickguard. Make sure that the foil will have contact with the pickguard screws (that will happen when you re-install the pickguard and the screws punch thru the foil). Run a length of wire that will make contact with the foil under the pickguard. Run the other end thru the neck pup route and solder it to ground. Your work will be invisible. Once your pickguard is grounded, you'll have no more static, and your geetar won't smell like it came out of the dryer :)

I think this will do the trick but I'll miss that spring-like fresh from the wash line fragrance! :laugh2:
