Yeah...but who in his/hers right mind will ever get a amp cranked up to 100 watts???
I use a 200+ watts amp with a meager 20 watts greenback sometimes, I have not blown anything up.
And if you're going to open up a JCM800 up wide get a 4x12" cab

They´re made in China. That´s enough for me to make the switch to Eminence, as I value human rights. Still trying to decide on which ones, though, but the Governors look promising ...

Yeah, I know what you mean mate I rarely use my JCM800 these days as I prefer my Orange AD30 for the sounds I want at the minute. Maybe I should look into a pair of the G12H's for my 2x12 cab.

I do also have an Orange 4x12 with Greenbacks, so I bring that out when I want to open the JCM800 up a bit more

Vintage 30's are neither "vintage" nor "30"...i think they are generally a better sounding speaker for heavier almost metal type tones, they definitely work great with my ENGL Savage 120 and sound fantastic under high gain.

Having said that i also ran my komet (vintage marshall plexi type amp) through half my vintage 30 box today up pretty loud with a pedal and it sounded fantastic, but unless you are going for a heavy sound id suggest something else speaker wise, like g12h30's...i plan on getting a quad of them next for my komet

yea the new eminence line should definately be looked at........ they are "based" on some of the celestion speakers, but supposedly are a bit improved, such as the Eminence Governor is similar to the V30, but without the upper mid peak (which makes it harsh to some)...... plus, with most of the eminence line, the power handling is much more than any of the celestions, and the prices are better!, without any apparent lack of quality or sound as compared to celestions

i, myself, have only heard one of the new eminence line, but it sounded very good

When I tried out the Triamp at the person's house who was selling it, he had it run through 4 v30s. Those things were harsh, icepicky and sterile, I hated it. At that time I ran the amp head through EVM-12Ls and found them to be much better.

Let me take that JCM 800 off your hands then :laugh2:

At the moment im "breaking in" my new 1936.
AS you said it sounds shrill and peaky but I have the same speakers in my 4x12 (which is 2nd hand and im sure well used) and I love the sound of them.

Ill let you know how it sounds later on when satch gets tired playing through it :laugh2:

EDIT: steril and lifelesss is probobly the best way to describe them

I have the Celestion GM12-70's (remember those?) in one of my 4x12 cabs and the Carvin GT12-16's (Carvin version of the V30) in my other 4x12.

What I noticed was my 70's have very pronounced mids.
But, smooths your amps distortion.

The GT12 has a more even across the board tone with the hi, mid, low frequencies. But, gives more grit to amps distortion. I assume the V30's are very similar.

The two cabs combined give a very nice all around sound.

I believe Carvin GT12 (now GS12) are made for them by Eminence.

As mentioned earlier, the new line of Eminence speakers are supposed to be quite good. Lot of variety to choose from.

I've always found E's to be very solidly constructed.

After reading some of the comments here, I'm thinking that a pair of V30's might not be what I'm looking for as I don't use all that much gain and also that they suffer from a similar shrillness as the 75w speakers.

Does anyone have any info about the Celestion G12H speakers? As Rid recommended these in an earlier post and going by the blurb on Watford Valves, they sound like a good speaker.

Just got the 1936 back upstairs and dang, It doesnt sound as good as the 4x12 yet but its getting there, Although there the same model speakers the do sound VERY different but now the 1936 actually sounds good and it now responds to eq changes :laugh2:

Brow see if your studio l let u blare the crap out of it overnight and see if it makes any difference.
It doesnt sound harsh or shrill anymore but still not at 100%

I can't see the guys at the studio having a problem with me blasting my 1936 cab overnight, so I might give it a try and see if it improves things.

I'm not sure ow many hours play my speakers have had, but it may be worth a try playing music through them for a good 10 hours to see if it improves anything

Hmmm.... swapped a V30 for a G12M (matched with a G12H) in my 2x12 and can be happier.

The V30 midrange was harsh and annoying to my ears. The G12M smooth and woody tone makes me smile. IMHO the V30 is a great speaker for a modern high-gain tone with a classic twist (compared to the G12T75).

Definitely, you need a speaker change (IMO). However, some people do like the V30, both clean and under gain. I think Orange cabs come with Vintage 30, maybe they're great match with these amps ?

Orange cabs in the UK come with V30's and Orange cabs in the USA come with Eminence speakers.

I do hear alot of great reviews of V30s and Orange amps. That's why I originally thought about changing the speakers in my 2x12 cab

Oh and I forgot to add that the clean tone from the speakers after breaking process was greatly improved too...

I'm gonna blast the speakers overnight at somepoint to see if that improves matters, and then I'll look into a speaker change if there's no improvement

Just a technical note here. In a cabinat every spaker recives the same amount of power from the amp, no mater how they are wired. So the maximun power a cabinet can handle it is the power rate of the weakest speaker multiplied by the number of speakers in the cab.

If you use an speaker rated at 30W and another rated at 60W the maximun power they can handle it is 60W (2x30=60W) Not 90W as someone stated!!!.

If you want your speaker to play safely the maximum power rating of the cabinet should be, at least, equal to the power of the amp. I said "at least" because some authors recomend it to be 25% bigger to be completely safe.

Agreed. The V30's seem to get alot of praise, but everything I've heard through them has a harsh, grainy sound. As an example, the Mesa F-30 combo I tried has a V30 in a partially closed cab and it had a horrible high end fizz/nasty honk. I later tried a F-30 head through a partially closed cab with the Mesa C90's and it was a totally different animal. Much smoother and sweeter. Kinda wish I'd gone that route because the F50 I got is too friggin loud
