Tell me about ENGL

Thats just flat out wrong.

I've been around ENGL amps for years. They dont get lost anywhere. Its the 5150 that gets overpowered by the ENGL in most cases. The ENGL will give you a more complex tone, better cut, superior build quality and more clarity than any 5150 or XXX or JS model Peavey.

There is a reason the ENGL is expensive. Same reason that VHT, Bogner or Diezel are expensive. You get quality with theseunits.

Honestly, it depends on your style. I've said it before; I'll say it again. My experience with amps and guitars and etc. is extremely limited to extreme metal. While that style covers alot of bases in the metal genre, it's still extreme.

I've found that Engl Fire and Powerball's don't cut through that well in a band situation when the other guitarist has a Mesa, Peavey, Marshall, or other amp that sits, IMO, perfectly in a mix.

Quality is debateble... honestly, I'd take my modded 5150 over a VHT (save the Deliverance, haven't tried that yet). VHT's have a reputation for not micing up well in an extreme metal situation. Diezel's, on the other hand... well, there are just amps out there that do what they do better and for cheaper.

That said, there's no debating that Bogner Uberschalls, Framus Cobra's, and the newly revamped ENGL Powerball's sound ****ing amazing.

Have you used a Diezel Herbert? Have you used the ENGLs at high gain settings? I dont thing so...they have gain levels that are just as high as a 5150 and are a much tighter amp. I have used VHT stuff live in REALLY heavy settings. They not only mic up well but they have a punch that will level a mountain.

DOnt take it the wrong way but at 14 you just cant know as much as you like to talk. Cool that you are so gung ho. I like that kind of energy.

Interesting how you mention the Framus Cobra and Diezels the way you did. Lets just leave things where they are now.....ok?

Horses for courses. I've played the VH4, not the Herbert. I have used the ENGL's in a high-gain setting, and know many people who have sold a Powerball for a 5150. I'm not referring to gain levels when I say 'extreme metal.' I'm talking about working against a certain drumming style that can dominate, vocals that can can also take over, and another guitarist trying to cut through the same spectrum you are. Add keyboards and a bassist to that; you need a very cutting tone.

I have to be honest; I don't think that my age is relevant here, and there was no reason to bring it up. It makes it seem to me that you ran out of other arguments and had to resort to bringing up my age. People are different, and mature/learn at different ages. At 14, I can know as much as say... a 36 year old. It all depends on the person.

(Not trying to infer that I know as much as you, just using it as a relative example)

I like Cobra's, I like Uberschall's, I like Rectifiers when tweaked right. I also like XXX's, 5150's, and Kranks. I don't like most VHT's, Ecstasy's, or VH4's. To each his own. I'm not going to get into a pissing match, though.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

I use a Powerball in an Extreme metal band situation with two guitarists, heavy blast beats and double bassing, heavy bass playing and screamed and growled vocals. I never had problems with cutting through in the mix although my other guitarist uses a mesa dual recto. Maybe that comes from using the the vintage cabs with V30s instead of the standard engl cabs with the V60s which you probably have tried DSS. It's one of the new powerballs and it seriously kicks ass in all channels and gain settings.
It's tight with lots of clarity and versaitillity but it excells at playing high-gain metal. Build quality is on mesa level or even better and since i live in germany where they are produces Engls are pretty cheap and affordable here

Re: Tell me about ENGL

If you multiplied me by ten, Jeff would still know more than me. :laugh2:

Don't judge him on his age, judge him on his experience. He gets a lot of undeserved heat for being 14.

If you bought it new in the past 2-3 months, then it's one of the revamped one's. They revoiced the lead channel a bit, changed the treble knob's sweep, improved the noisegate, and improved the mids on the amp. It kicks ass now!

Thanks, as always, Bee ;).

Re: Tell me about ENGL

It seems like either the Houston area is horrible for finding good amps, or I just don't know the right people. Ugh.

I've always been impressed with the advice and knowledge that Jeff imparts on here. Personally I think the age 14 thing is just a cover and he's really a 42 year old MD of a large music chain, toying with us. Plus, Jeff, I hate you for your gear you swine!! ;) I'm toying with selling a couple of the kids for a new amp!!

now that i had a look at the prices at rocksolidamps they don't seem to be much cheaper here in germany(after you take the exchange rates into account), but compared to buying a mesa they are quite cheap. A new powerball costs about 1500€ here(usually you can get a good discount as a regular customer); a mesa dual recot costs about 1000 more and is on the same level quality-wise(maybe a small bit under the engl imo) and just doesn't sound as good. So here in germany engls are a great choice compared ot the american brands which cost lots more.

Not to mention your beer is infinitely better than ours. Lucky!

I totally agree, lots of room out there for different viewpoints. Arguing is just do damn tiring.

I still stand on the 'experience counts' thing but i do agree that there are people that have been around for eons with a very limited view. On the other side younger guys (and gals) that are more open minded can have a better view on a broader range.

Yeah, he plays a Mesa combo, I think it's a Trem-o-verb or something. I can't remember. I've been looking into the 5150, I wouldn't mind it at all.

For what it's worth, 5150's sound killer when combined with a Dual Recto (Tremoverb in this case). The 5150 tends to dominate the upper mids while the Recto dominates the lower mids.....so when you both riff together they sound huge, yet are still separate in the mix.

Re: Tell me about ENGL

Engl Thunder head...one of the best Engls I have ever tried, I liked it better than
a Powerball and the Savage120(which I like alot).
And the Screamer as well, the Thunder is simple and goodsounding.
