Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

I have heard some guys around Austin using them and they suprisingly sound pretty good when used right. I never gave them much thought but they sound good. They are also giving me a serious case of G.A.S.

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

Scott Gorham in Thin Lizzy had a LP Deluxe, and in a recent interview said that the mini-HB's left a lot to be desired tone-wise, but he had to have a different tone than the other guitarist, so he felt stuck with the guitar. He thought the other guitarist's tone was much better.

A gfood deluxe can be a great guitar!

If I were going to buy a Deluxe today i'd look for a late 90's or early 2000 era "reissue"...it's MUCH less of a crap shoot than trying to buy a Norlin era Gibson anything!

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

Adrian Smiths gold top is a deluxe, I think, but I think he had it modded for a full sized bucker in the bridge..

I always thought the deluxe was a bit of an odd thing for Gibson to have ever made. All the big guns who played LP's in the seventies were using old '59's or similar with full sized buckers so Gibson make their main guitar with minibuckers in... go figure.

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

Yes the first mod you should do to any Les Paul Deluxe is route it out for proper humbuckers.

I respectfully disagree! If you want big humbuckers buy a standard!

I'd much rather have an LP with P-90's than mini's.

^Funny I thought the same thing, blueman, In fact, I bought mine specifically to put in P90s and make a "56" but I fell in love with the tone and my Deluxe will remain a Deluxe ....mind you I also have Big Hum & P90 equipped Lps as well.

The minis are definitely somewhere "between" a Full Hum & a P90....but attached to a an unchambered hunk of mahogony/maple cap they is no doubt soundwise that DeLuxes are ALL LES PAUL!

I really noticed how ballsey that guitar really is when plugging it immediately after palying a Tele through the same amp!

As far as opinions go.....for every Scott Gorham who say "meh" to minis there's a Pete Townshend who dug em!:1:

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

There is a guy around town with a very old deluxe- he has Seymour mini's on it-
It kills!

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

^Cheezemaster just gave me a deal on a set of SD minis...can't wait to get those in!

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

I have a 76 Pancake Body Deluxe with a Maple neck... my original mini's died and i have used various Duncans as replacements... and now i have a newer set of Gibson Mini's replacements as well..... That guitar has always sounded good... no matter what PU's i put in it...

but ya when i get around to buying another Deluxe the 1999-2003 era Reissues would be high on my list!

i always wanted an 1971-74-ish Deluxe in goldtop because that is the guitar Townshend used on stage during the Who's mid 70's haydays.... i always liked those guitars even if the SG Special is the True Who Live Sound everyone else wants to copy... Pete's USA 1975 tour rig sounded huge!!!

The mini hum has great tone.... Just no matchup for a full size humbucker power wise. If go over their old video footage, Robertson always has a more aggressive tone than Gorham..... Then again other than Snowy White every Lizzy guitarist had a more aggressive sound than Gorham. I don;t thing there is anything wrong with playing that kind of stuff with a mellow warm tone howver I don;t think it was a good matchup with Sykes when the music started getting a lot heavier.

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

Of the older ones I've played I liked the bite you get out of the minis. Don't know if I noticed any difference from the maple necks through and whether that had anything to do with the tone.

But I agree with those that crave a P90 equipped LP.

Gorham said in a more current guitar mag interview that the LP Deluxes he used back then were god awful and never stayed in tune... but said Gibson gave them to them at a nice discount and said in the 70's everyone used LP's anyways...

currently i think i've seen Gorham using Strats oddly

He switched to Strats because they are easier on his back he stated.

Re: Tell me about Gibson LP Deluxes

A friend had one - awful guitar, sounded terrible. Remember these things were bitsas created to use up a load of mini HBs that Gibson got when they bought Epiphone.

exactly. I had a Musicians Friend Deluxe that was killer-Sustained for days, prolly the best sustaining non custom shop Les Paul I ever owned. I had a Norlin briefly that was a real dog-thin-wimpy.

As for Gorham/Robertson- They both played deluxes up until Robbos last tour/time with the band. Robbo later on ditched his famous "standardized" 1960 Les Paul Custom (see my ava) and had his Deluxe routed for a couple real deal PAFs. Robbo felt his Deluxe was a much better sounding guitar naturally. But I think his deluxe even with minis still sounded better than his LPC

IMO- Gorhams tone was MUCH better with his deluxe than it was with that tobaccoburst with full size buckers he used after Gary joined the band. At least live and in recordings. FWIW Gorham was also at a point in time when he was so whacked out on Heroin most of the time, it probably didn;t matter what he played.

Adrian is another guy who got a killer norlin- and had it routed.

And HERE is Robbos deluxe with the PAFs (and Robbo of course drunk out his mind)
