What is this thing?? It seems to be a tube preamp with digital effects?? What would u need to use this thing and how good does it sound? The downside of it?

Re: Tell me about he ADA MP 1

That's my recollection about it, although I don't recall exactly what effects were in it--delay, chorus, and EQ maybe? Personally, I never got good results with the MP-1. It always sounded really compressed and just kind of lifeless to me, although I've heard plenty of other guys get good sounds with them. Kirk Hammett used a Tube Screamer in conjunction with his and that was his tone for yearss (still could be for all I know). I definitely prefer the Marshall JMP-1 for that sort of device.

Re: Tell me about he ADA MP 1

A friend of mine had it for a LONG time. It sounded great with his Peavey power amp and Marshall cabs. the only thing that bothered me about it was that it sounded dated, even after reprogamming it. it always sounded like "the 80's", for lack of a better description. it wasn't bad, but it's not for everyone.

Re: Tell me about he ADA MP 1

Totally 80's!

It was the POD before the POD ever existed.

Used by many back in the day...White Lion, the first couple Extreme records, Dokken, Skid Row, Warrent...

Re: Tell me about he ADA MP 1

I wanted one of these things bad back in 1989...... Never did get one... i hear people can score them on e-bay these days for $100-$200..... I saw a band playing a bar last year doing 80's metal covers and the guitarist had a ADA, a Peavey power amp, and a Marshall 4x12...... sounded great..... but i hear they can be noisey

That's why I ask, I love the tone's of those guys, minus the 80's production. Extreme has the best tone I have ever heard.

Re: Tell me about he ADA MP 1

I have a MP-1 and I love it. It is a very versatile preamp. The effects aren't worth talking about since it just has a cheesy chorus. There are two signal paths either tube or solid state clean with chorus (Roland Jazz Chorus). There are only two preamp tubes so it is not a super high gain monster. You have a seperate gain for each of the tubes and a three band eq with a presence control. Your choice of tubes makes a huge difference. I use a EH 12ax7 in the first stage and a svetlana 5751 in the second stage. If you use two high gain 12ax7's it can sound compressed. Its not complicated. Most people who say they don't like it want a traditional amp front end.

PROS:
Reliable
128 storage patches
Good basic Marhsall and Fender sounds
A little tweaking produces a wide array of tones

CONS:
The ON/OFF switch is on the back which is stupid
Heat dissapation is pretty poor
It doesn't tolerate cheap tubes well (hiss, hum and feedback)
The eq seems to be set at frequencies different from a real amp
To use all of the patches effectively it needs midi switching
Tubes last about a year (heat dissapation)

I had one for a long while and got some pretty usable tones from it.
I also ran it into a Peavey 120/120 Power Amp!

One of the cool things about it was, it's midi controller.
I had a Boss SE-50 and was able to have the ADA's midi footswitch control both devices.
With the 128 presets I was able to program a whole set's worth of patches for the 3 bands I was working with back in the day.

The only downside to that rig was, (and maybe it was my lack of tweaking) it made all of my guitars sound the same.
It didn't matter if I used my Strat, tele or 335 copy, they sounded the exact same.

Nah, that sounds about right.

It's the main reason I never bought one back in the day.

What was the second version with the LCD display that came out just before ADA went under? MP-2? From my limited time muckin' around they seemed hipper but honestly, I'm just not into that kind of tone.

The POD Pro seems like a safer bet, WAY more versatile too.

YMMV.

Re: Tell me about he ADA MP 1

I had one for about a three hours. I bought it and a solid state power amp (I don't know what kind) and ran it through a marshall 2 x 12". It was noisy and sounded horrible to me. I'm not afraid to tweak knobs (er, blue bottons), and I'm sure I tweaked every one its got to see if I could use it. I couldn't do a thing with it, so I took it back where I got it and demanded my money back. This was in about '95 maybe. I see them on ebay, but I run for cover. I'm sure it would sound a bit better with a tube power amp, but I can't see how it could be much better than what I heard. Not good.

Re: Tell me about he ADA MP 1

I've been using the ADA MP-1 both stock and modded for the past couple of years and I've tried many amps and preamps and I keep going back to my 3TM MP-1 setup. I've tried Mesa preamps (except Quad), Marshall, Peavey, Line6, etc.. and I've tried amp heads by Mesa, Marshall, peavey, randall, Rivera, etc.. and like i said, I always liked the tone I get out of my rig.

Now that I've gotten a much much better poweramp (VHT 2502), the tone is even better.

Here're some clips I did while back using my 3TM MP-1 into my old Carvin t100 tube poweramp:

I will be recording more clips soon with the new setup and I'll be using a good mic like a Shur 57.

Cheers

i find a lot of multifx units make all my guitars sound the same..... which in some cases is good.... my Squire sounds the same as my American Standard thru my POD....

My old Roland analog rack multifx is extremely cool..... the GP-8...... Works great infront of my Peavey Classic series amps clean channels!!! But oneday i would love to get a good power amp and buy some of these old preamps like the ADA and a Marshall MP1 and so on...
