Tell me about Music Man Silhouettes

Who's got one? This is a guitar you don't hear much about but has been in production since the late 80's. Keith Richards played them pretty heavily from '89-'95. I'm interested in one, but they don't come up used very often - which means they're either sold in small numbers or those who own them keep them.

They sound a tiny bit more modern than a US Strat, for example. I know it sounds like a buzzword with no meaning but that's my overall impression. The build quality is usually perfect (Musicmen are truly stunning instruments) and, to me at least, they are EXTREMELY comfortable. I'm only about 5'9, and the nut width and guitar size are perfect for me.
I've been dreaming about getting one for ages, but ended up with two Axis Super Sport/Sport and an Albert Lee HH.

Re: Tell me about Music Man Silhouettes

The guitar is well made and as confortable as any strato can be. Floyd Rose was ok also.
But, for the price, it didn't impressed me. The body shape was so small that I've felt really ridiculous with her hunging from my shoulders.
For that kind of axe, I (personally) would go first for a Japanesse Charvel production, SoCal or San Dimas, depending on the pickups you liked more. You will save lots of money and have a nice super-strat.
But, if you want one, it's a good guitar, without any doubt.

Re: Tell me about Music Man Silhouettes

I've had one for about 6 years. Mine's a special. The neck is a strange shape which gives me fatigue if I use it for a full show. Because of its size it's also very thin sounding acoustically which transferred to the pickups. Ended up changing out the pickups almost immediately. The used prices are so bad I keep it as my rehearsal guitar now. It is we'll made though and has amazing tuning stability. Hope that helps.

Re: Tell me about Music Man Silhouettes

I use a Silo Special, and it is my favorite guitar. I'm pretty short, 5'6, with little girl hands though. It is perfect for me. The neck on mine is scalloped, and I switched out the pickups for a CC in the bridge, Alnico II Pro in the neck. The switching is 5 way, like their Axis Super Sport model, which allows inside and outside coils in the 2 & 4 positions.
