i have a chance to get a 5150 2x12 60 watt combo for really cheap.... and i was wondering what i should look out for on it. Any common problems that you know about. I probably will just turn around and sell it for a profit... but i want to make sure im not buying a lemon.

any info is appreciated.

I've heard really good things about the 5150 combo's. It's the only 5150 with reverb, and it's half the power of the heads. The only bad thing I've heard is that they weigh a ton.

Re: tell me about the 5150

I've used the head alot, and it is heavy! but then again it is a tube amp. I love the 5150, is great for high gain metal. I have managed to get cool tones out of it. If u reckon you can resale at a profit, then go for it!

Re: tell me about the 5150

IMO that amp needs good preamp tubes to really sound its best. So if it sounds really harsh when you get it, toss in new preamp tubes. The 5150 is really bright so I would highly suggest JJs. They really helped tone down the brightness.

Re: tell me about the 5150

I have the 5150 2x12 combo. It's great. The rhythm channel is really beefy and cuts through. The cool thing about it is, you can get it to sound pretty vintage-Marshally by turning the gain down and disengaging the crunch button. Pretty versatile as far as rock guitar sounds go. The lead channel is supposedly voiced closer to the 5150II. I think it's great. Not as tweakable, but when you want to shred, it just goes off with this super smooth, creamy sound. Pretty sweet.

I think if you don't like it, you'll still be able to sell it for a good amount, because 5150's are very desirable amps! :13:

Hope you like it! :smoker:

Re: tell me about the 5150

One more thing, I agree about putting JJ's in there. At first, I thought they didn't do much for my tone, but then I turned it up to about 1, maybe 1.5 (freaking loud!) and I heard the difference. It really balances out the brightness like J said.

Re: tell me about the 5150

thanks guys... i'm going to go check it out later on and see what it is like

Re: tell me about the 5150

A decent bias pot is a must for those amps. Even though the 5150 II has a bias adjustment, the sweep isn't wide enough.

Re: tell me about the 5150

i go and check it out..... the dude that was selling it told me he had it for a few years...... but he didnt play guitar... i was getting really weird vibes from the guy and i think that it was stolen.... so i passed on it.... something just didnt seem right

Re: tell me about the 5150

Well, I'd like to know how someone stole it. Not like it's easy to move around, especially on the run. Thing weighs close to 90 lps.

I'm not flaming you, but buying stolen gear is really uncool!!!

I don't know about you but I busted my butt to pay for what I own... so did the person that owned that amp originally if it really is stolen.

Sorry, it aint right.
