Tell me about the 5751

Re: Tell me about the 5751

Cool! I wonder what one of these in the V1 of my Metaltronix would do.
It would lower the front-end gain considerably. Running a 5751 in the V1 slot in a Splawn or Metaltronix yields a slightly brighter tone. You should definitely try it if you've ever thought about putting a boost in front of the Metaltronix.

Re: Tell me about the 5751

Huh. Well, this is definitely going in my little book of stuff I need to do when I get back, alongside:

7.62x39 ammo
Drive my Bronco
Sell a bunch of gear
Download the Black Ops mission pack
*ahem* spend some quality time with the wifey
play with the new kid
etc...

I'm not worried about losing a lot of gain. Like I said, with a 12ax7 in there, I can't really take the 2nd gain past 12:00 before it goes squeals and compresses to the point of mush. I've had 12au7s and at7s in the V1 and it did the same thing except I had to take the gain to about 3:30. It's a ridiculous amp.

Re: Tell me about the 5751

I'm totally bringing this back from the dead!!!

I've always been wondering, IS there a difference between the JAN-GE 5751 and the JAN-Phillips 5751 other than the "GE" and "Phillips"?? I would assume that they are both 5751's and JAN type so they would sound the same?

Re: Tell me about the 5751

TwilightOdyssey! Vow!

:)

I love 5751's. Early 60's GE's followed by later 60's GE's :)...

Followed by Sylvania's and Phillips...

Great preamp tubes!

Re: Tell me about the 5751

so just 1 5751 in the v1 slot will clean the headroom up a bit ? I hate to be one of those people but if you want to send me one to try I would gladly post results in my Mesa LSS 4x10... never tried anything but 12ax7s before !

Re: Tell me about the 5751

I just bought a JAN 5751 for my Mesa Lonestar Special 4x10... is it better to put it in the PI position or V1 for better headroom... 60 bucks with tax and shipping for one tube is a bit much but I need that headroom!

EDIT- The tube store said the v1 position should be tried first

It is nothing like a real good NOS early 60's GE 5751... but still JJ 803s (not 83s, 803s) is also another choice you guys should be aware of. It has a bit less gain than 83s and other 12AX7's, and is cheap. It sounds a bit stiff to me, but still is not that bad.

Re: Tell me about the 5751

It's funny (funny strange, not funny ha-ha), but I've recently switched to using the 5751 in the PI slot in certain amps. While it's great for dialing down the gain in the v1 slot, I find that the 5751 can really change the overall tone of certain amps, making them REALLY bright and hard-sounding.

The compromise I've found for the V1 slot is the DW7/ECC832. As the first half of the valve is the same as an 12AX7/ECC83, it doesn't change the voicing of the preamp at all, but the second half dials the gain way back. You end up with the same tone you know and love but with a much more workable gain structure.

"JAN" means "Joint Army-Navy". JAN tubes are tubes from regular production that are preselected to meet certain standards demanded for military use. Of course, the version made by GE is going to be different than the version made by Phillips, which are two different companies and two different tube designs. The main difference in JAN tubes is that they are specifically picked to meet military specifications, so they should be more reliable and durable in use than common stock versions.

Re: Tell me about the 5751

I just happen to have tried a JAN GE 5751 in V1 of one of my amps last night and tone-wise it was in the region of a JJ ECC803 / Ruby 12AX7A / GT 12AX7C. Difficult to explain the affect on headroom, other than to say with a SG 498T pup on 7, with a 12AX7 breakup began a bit before 1 o'clock on the volume dial, and with a 5751, break up begins around 1:30 to 2 o'clock on the volume dial. (no master on the amp)

Don't know if that's helpful. This stuff is hard to describe without you standing there and playing it yourself. There are too many variables (guitar, pups, amp, cable, etc.) Like Frank Zappa once said, "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture."

Re: Tell me about the 5751

I want to try a 5751 in the PI of my 100w Soldano to see if it will make any difference since most of the gain is in the preamp design.

Re: Tell me about the 5751

Wow, talk about your zombie thread. I never did try a 5751 in my 13 Watter. Don't remember why, but I just never got hold of one. I haven't played the amp in ages... it has s cold solder joint that needs to be found & fixed, and I haven't found the time.

Re: Tell me about the 5751

I really dislike the JAN Phillips 5751 sound... sounded flabby and harsh in that amp.

Me too... In general im not a fan of any JAN tube. These are tubes made for radars and such dont always have good audio quality they get passed off as NOS and charged a premium for them and many are pretty eh sounding.

Nor have I. I got back from deployment and the old M-1000 sounds better than it ever did. Go figure.

I got a JAN 5751 from GE .... really tightened up the bass in my amp and made it clearer with fuzz in the V1 position. reliability with these tubes is a big factor too

That sounds amazing. Time to go searching for them for my Super Reverb...
