Tell me about the 5751

Re: Tell me about the 5751

It is nothing like a real good NOS early 60's GE 5751... but still JJ 803s (not 83s, 803s) is also another choice you guys should be aware of. It has a bit less gain than 83s and other 12AX7's, and is cheap. It sounds a bit stiff to me, but still is not that bad.

I have actually been using the JJ 803s in the PI of most of my amps for the last few years now. It really opens up the tone and seems to add some clarity. Personally, I think the 803s is the best preamp tube to come out of the JJ factory, that I have tried.

Since when does JJ make a 5751?

Re: Tell me about the 5751

I got some old JAN Philips 5751s a while back for my epiphone valve jr. (which is probably going to become an 18 watt marshall copy here before too long) and the difference between the 12ax7 and the 5751 was pretty tremendous. The 12ax7 was made by RCA I think but the 5751s just sounded 'bouncier' and much more buttery-smooth. They don't distort as much but if you have a 5 watt amp power tube distortion occurs at such low volume that it isn't a huge difference.

I really like the 5751 as a pre-amp tube and will be trying it once I complete the valve jr. to 18 watts conversion (called the baby will conversion, everything's on this website. Also I'm doing the conversion because I'm pretty sure I nuked the valve Jr. stuff while modding it again recently.)
