Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

I'm two clicks and a few keyboard strokes from buying one, the head version. Got a cab already.

Apparently the only bad things are it's single channel, that it can't do modern heavy sounds without an OD pedal, and that the FX loop is unusable. I can live with that.

What do you guys think? It would be my first tube amp. Yay me. :D

Re: Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

Single channel amps are easy, if you use your guitar's volume control to clean it up, and run a pedal for super heavy tones. The Tweaker does a fine low volume tone, and when you crank it up past one o'clock, it really starts to sing.

I'd say that if you sit down with it beside your Cube, you could get the Tweaker to do almost all of those tones, only better. More importantly is how it will feel to play it when you get it to a good gig volume. If you run the gain just right, it will totally clean up from how you pick.

What's your cab?

Pay $200 more and get the Tweaker 40. It's a better gigging amp, has better low end definition, 2 tweakable channels, and a foot switch. It isn't much bigger than the 15, but is twice the amp.

+1000000

Every time I've go to Guitar Center since they got the Tweaker 40, it's THE amp I plug into to check out other guitars.

My cab is a 1x12 custom built for somebody else. Has an Emi Legend 125.

My budget is as tight as it's always been and the 15 was 20% off.
So I'm sorry to dissapoint, but I got the 15!

My first proper tube amp should be here tomorrow. :D

Dude, freaking congrats! Those are still great amps. I'm sure that with your rig, you'll enjoy the hell out of it.

Re: Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

Thank you guys!!

A question, since the Tweaker can take 6v6, 6L6 and EL34 power tubes:
What should i expect by changing the stock 6v6 tubes to any of the others??
First time dealing with this stuff. :D

6L6's will have more headroom and more bottom end.

Can't really speak for EL34's, as I haven't used too many EL34 amps, but they should have more headroom than the stockers, but not as much as the 6L6's, IIRC.

Re: Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

It's hard to go wrong, buying the Tweaker 15 with those discount coupons. They've still got a good bit of volume.

Re: Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

The stock power tubes are not all that great but wear 'em out a bit breaking the amp in. I have an older set of RCA 6v6's in mine, gray plates. Real good tubes.

Be careful what you use. There is a lot of voltage going to the PT's, cheap ones won't last long most likely. It is a good amp, I am finding it does those kind of roughed up, dirty sounds better than anything.

this is going to depend on the octal tube you replace with as each one will have it's own character I'm going to be loading mine with 6CA7s. The 6CA7 is what old Hiwatts had they are supposed to give you the round lows of a 6L6 with the mid and high content usually associated with an EL34.

I think Eurotubes had a pretty good description of the various power tube characters. Obviously YMMV as different mfrs of the same tubes can sometimes possess slightly different qualities.

Congrats on the amp I got the 15 instead of the 40 and I haven't regretted my decision for the months I've had my amp. I too used a coupon on mine to get a killer deal. You should be very pleased between it and your Cube you've got all your bases covered.

Re: Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

Another Tweaker!!!! Congrats.

I'd be interested to know where you got the info about the effects loop. I've got my modulation running through it and it seems to do ok.....mind you I've had nothing to compare it too.

The poweramp tubes run v.hot as others have explained, so they tend to die quickly as a matter of course. I ran the stock tubes for about 4 weeks then one developed a problem so I had them replaced - much better tones once that was done.

I've set the amp up as a fat clean amp (preamp at about 11 o'clock on the clean drive setting) and then used pedals and the 3 voicings to give me a whole palette of tones that you couldn't get from another single amp. As my music range goes from clean blues through funk, classic and hard rock, to old school metal the pedals are the only way for my eclectic tastes to get tonefully satisfied.

Re: Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

For me the difference in price between the 2-channel Tweaker-40 and the Tweaker 15 was a solid 2x12 cab which I definitely need. So, I went with the 15 and a cab, and it does lack some balls, but there's always later to get the Tweaker-88 with the KT-88s!!

By the way, this lil' 15 watter was vibrating the floor of my apartment building today with just a 1x12 open-back.

I think its pretty damn capable of modern heavy sounds. It won't sound like a pissed off beehive but there is plenty of gain there.

The loop is not useless. Its designed for line level rack gear. Some pedal can handle that signal with no problems. Other can't.

Its a real flexible amp. Does nice Fender and Marshall tones. The Vox channel sounds a lot like mesa to me with mids down a bit and the low/highs set to taste. Bump the mids/highs and lower the bass for Vox tones

Actually nop, I use my tweaker with EL34s and they run super hot in the lunchbox, they have less headroom than 6V6, It really surprised me how hot the amp gets with EL34s, you can pretty much fry some eggs in the upper grill

Re: Tell me about the Egnater Tweaker 15

All these heat reports are scaring me a bit.
I'd hate it if this thing went bang in two years or something.

I hope there's things that can be done to cool the critical parts a bit?
