Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

Looking at one of these used from a local store for use as a spare/home amp. It's probably overpriced, but I might try to deal with 'em. Down the road I might gut it and build a 2204 or 6V6 Plexi into the chassis.

Gearjoneser, you owned one of these in 2005.

Tell me what you know.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

Here is mine, killer lil amp. I put a jack on the back so I could plug into other cabs, but with the right speaker, it is killer by itself. Personally, I see no need to gut for tube needs, this thing has ballz, and in a blindfold test, very few would ever guess it is an SS amp. These are going to be worth good money, get em while they are cheap

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

Ha! I KNEW you would have one. The last few that sold on eBay went from $90 to $200. I think they want $149 for the one I'm looking at.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

Worth every penny, if it works. Gotta open the master to really have it sounding great.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

It has the much-maligned G12M-70 in it. Room for improvement there, from what I've read.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

Sometimes, I wish I'd kept that amp. Kevlar is right. 80's Marshalls are the new 60's Fenders. Grab the good ones while you can.

Even though that amp was solid state, it has the 800 preamp section so it sounds authentic. I'm a Goodwill addict. I'm always stopping in thrift stores to find cool stuff. That lil Marshall was probably the best score....$25. I sold the amp for $200 about 6 months later.

I still haven't unveiled my latest Marshall acquisition. Imagine going back to 1984, and pulling a brand new JCM 800 100W single channel 212 combo out of it's carton. That's what my 30 year old JCM 800 looks like. Everyone I've shown it to freaks out.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

Frank F'ing Lee had one of those. IFLRC, it sounded pretty good. Especially with the Sonex.

Thank you.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

I had one.of those...5210?

Those old english made 800 series SS Marshalls sound great with a good speaker..I did not like the M70s they usually got paired with and a buddy converted mine so I could use it with my 4x12 (65s)...awesome stuff.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

Was that the MOSFET amp?

Another kid I played guitar with had a SS Marshall combo that was kick ass. Loud and sounded really good.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

This one is pre-MOSValve.

GJ, I'm jealous. That combo sounds totally kickass. I had a DIY 100-watt JMP combo, with top-mount controls. I started with a JMP 2203 head that I bough new from Manny's on 48th Street in about 1981. When I wanted to down-size from a half stack, I bought a 50-watt 2x12 combo, re-braced the enclosure, installed my 2203 chassis, and added a pair of EVM12L speakers. That was a fun amp.

One of the things I like about this 5010 is that it reminds me of the last Marshall I owned, which was a 4010 combo: JCM800 2204 chassis in a 1x12 combo box. The ultimate "sleeper" Marshall if you ask me. #1 on my "never shoulda sold it" list, above even the 2203 and a Hiwatt DR103.

You guys have sold me; I'm buying this amp on Tuesday if it's still there. It'll be a good "home" amp and a solid backup for the 18 Watter when it's on the fritz (like it is right now). Plus, it's always nice to have something around the house with that big Marshall script logo on the front.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

I had one and it was a great amp. I had mine modified with an effects loop. It had the basic Marshall JCM800 tone and depending on the pedals you used it could cover a lot of ground.

Re: Tell me about the Marshall 5010 "Master Lead Combo"

The best laid plans... LOL

You guys sold me on the little 5010, and I went to the store to pick it up yesterday, but I ended up getting this instead. I've been looking for a nice Bandit for a while, it has twice the power, reverb, and cost slightly over half what they were asking for the Marshall. Still, it's a cool little amp. I'll keep my eye on it and if it's staill there in a few weeks, maybe pick it up then.
