Tell me about the Parallel Axis pickups...

Re: Tell me about the Parallel Axis pickups...

How does the PATB-1b take coil tapping?

I have been considering new pups in an old bolt-on neck warlock with a single locking trem. It's maple neck, rosewood board, and a basswood body. I recall reading somewhere that the PATB1 plays nicely with basswood.

It is not my main guitar, but is wired for coil tapping. If it can handle both medium to high gain humbucker sounds and some sweet single coil sounds, it might breathe some new life in that guitar.

Re: Tell me about the Parallel Axis pickups...

I can't help you on the coil tapping portion of the question but I'll chime in and verify that the PATB-1 does indeed sound very nice in basswood. I have it in a Jackson Dinky Reverse Professional (basswood, maple/maple) and it's great! I'm sure someone will be along shortly to assist in the coil tapping portion of the question . . . :cool2:

Re: Tell me about the Parallel Axis pickups...

You could search and you would find that the Crazy 8 is a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop double coil, humbucking, bridge pup designed with input from the forum. It had a reduced, bulk price during its initial introduction to forum members at that time.

It took many, many polls, lots of voting and discussion to come up with the end result. MJ did her magic and it was magic...possibly one of the best pups ever made, by anyone, anywhere. It is not common as it is a custom shop item...so you won't see them in GC, etc.

It is a AlNiCo 8, parallel axis design (Specs are here)

There are a few forum pups like this in the custom shop, the Crazy 8, the Brobucker, and the Stra-Bro.

is the Crazy 8 anything like a PATB-1 with an A8?

Re: Tell me about the Parallel Axis pickups...

I love the patb2 with a fullshred as a hybrid with an a8. I don't like the patb2 cause it's too warm, a bit squshy in the lows. the fullshred coil gives it more edge, and the entire combination just screams and squeels.
