tell me all about your favorite delays!

So I've had my Boss RV-3 for almost a decade now, but I'm coming to decide I really just want to leave reverb effects behind for the most part and dive into the wacky wonderful world of delays.

So tell me what you've got, what you want, what you miss having, Let er rip!

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

I've got 3 delays at the moment, a Boss DM-2 Analog Delay, a Retro-Sonic Analog Delay and an Ibanez DE-7, which is a digital delay with a tape echo emulation mode. My preference is for analog delays (could you tell?) and the one occupying my pedalboard at the moment is the Retro-Sonic, because it has the classic BBD analog delay sound of the DM-2, but with twice the available delay time, up to 600ms. It also has a second footswitch which halves the delay time setting, and a tone cut control to further darken the repeats to taste. All in a reasonably sized, true bypass pedal. Very nice.

I still use the DE-7 in its tape echo mode for very long delays when necessary, and of the digital delays it is the most guitar friendly I have heard in its price range.

Cheers..................................wahwah

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

My Boss RE-20 Space Echo hasn't been out of my signal path since I got it.

Otherwise I like the Line6 Echo Park and the Yamaha UD Stomp, which is phenomenal - 8 bands of individually tappable, filterable, modulatable delay. YOu can build choruses, reverbs, flangers and more.

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

I'm currently using a boss DD5. It's a decent digital delay. Prior to that I had the Line 6 DL4, which is a good unit, but I found I was generally only using the digital delay anyway, so I went to the boss to keep pedalboard real estate free.

Hopefully in the near future I'll upgrade to the TC Nova delay. That's an excellent unit. But I don't do a lot with delay in any of my current bands, so it's pretty far back in the 'gear to buy' queue.

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

Roland Space Echo RE-201 Just can't beat the sound combo of real tape and the preamp in the machine. Warmth, clarity, just the right amount of darkening on the repeats, a slight touch of modulation to give a real vibe.

Its just the perfect delay save for the obvious cost, size, reliability concerns etc

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

my ad9 keeley modded is the best analog delay i have used, its so warm and responsive, i havent used a lot of the boutique clones though. as for digital, the BYOC ping pong echo delay is phenomenal. there isnt anything you cant do with that pedal, insanely tweakable

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

How can anyone like the Nova...most flat thing I ever have heard....then I rather use the Line6...hehe

if i wanted a delay with tap tempo, basically only used for leads what would you suggest rid?

I thought I would add (though not asked directly), the EHX Deluxe Memory Man w/Hazarai is pretty sweet. More features than the average delay, great sound quality (for a digital doing the analoge thing) - and a tap tempo, modulation, reverberation. Lots of fun without a lot of complication.

I like the one above; the Yamaha Magic Stomp and the G-Major sound stellar also. Those three have me covered for delays.

The DLS Echotap.

Not to be spammy...but the new Echotone is out as well....

thanks niels, any reason the echotone over the delayla xl?

thanks scot, ive seen the eh but not tried it.

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

my (Least) favorite delay is waiting for the wife to get ready to go.. always...sheesh.

Oh...um.. you were talking gear... I dont have a delay pedal.. I want one though so im gonna learn whats good from what you guys say here.
I do have a question.. what is use of a delay?? I have an idea, but want to be sure.. thanks

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

Switchable between taptempo and global time:)
We actually made at the same time we did the XL.
The chips works alittle different on the Echotone.
It is not as revebish as the XL....but it has that thing that it can be subtle or more pronounced due to the variable tone, it is not just a cut, it interacts with how the delay works.
It has more bandwidth, but is not sterile, still has some slight grungy sound to it.
A good blend of several worlds.
We played around with that thing for a long time:D
It was a fun project!
I have my own blue/green one;)

Well the repeats give a sense spaciousness to the sound. I like to roll of the wet/dry and solo over it and it sounds like playing into the Grand canyon. You can use it for rhythmic delays (the Edge?) and in some of the wilder units out there they somehow can even take on pitchshifting and modulation qualities.

But it's really all about using repeats, probably most often as some kind of echo.

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

EHX Deluxe Memory Man takes up some real estate, but for me it's worth it. It has never left my board. It is an older model with the integral transformer. It provides for chorus and/or vibrato effects to be added to the repeats ..... very sweet.

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

i use an akai headrush e2. it's not really thought of as a delay pedal. it usually gets grouped with the loopers, but it's a really nice delay. it's digital, with tape emulation, and of course the looper.

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

My favorite delays are some really old-school 12-bit rackmount things with a blue face plate. State of the art circa 1983.

Rid & WahWah... they probably know what I speak of... hahaha

Not gonna mention the name!

Old Korg SDD & the Rolands are really great too...

TC2290... killer. No filler.

That Echotone looks really hip... I haven't tried too many of the "new" delay stompboxes, my old Ibanez DDL keeps going & going... though it is getting a bit worn these days.

Re: tell me all about your favorite delays!

I use an indestructible BOSS DD6 and I'm quite satisfied with it but I must say that it's NOT a quality delay unit, it just serves me extremely well onstage.
