Tell me more about the Anniversary Seths

I hear they are ever so slightly hotter than the stock Seth Lovers, plus the fact that you can get them with either A2 or A5 magnets. But, I would like to hear some of the real world comparisons between them and the run of the mill Seth Lovers. I've read the reviews using the search function. I'm looking for a head to head comparo from those who have experience with both. Thanks so much.

Re: Tell me more about the Anniversary Seths

Also, if someone remembers whether the A2 or A5 was the "original".

Re: Tell me more about the Anniversary Seths

Do you mean original to the PAF's? I think Gibson used just about whatever they had laying in their parts bin, if I remember the stories correctly. Since the Seths are A2 and you have a choice of A2 or A5 with the Anniversary sets, I would even accept a comparo between stock Seths and A5 Anniveraries, if no one can compare A2 to A2.

Re: Tell me more about the Anniversary Seths

I took out regular Seths, only to replace them with the 50th Anniversaries. The difference isn't night and day, but they seem a little clearer and maybe a tiny bit hotter. Both are A2. I believe they're all wound on the original Gibson Leesona winder, only I'm assuming that regular Seths are wound by a talented employee, while the 50th Ann's are wound by Seymour's protege, Maricella Juarez.

I really wish I had both A2's and A5's, just so I could make a clear choice, but I have a feeling my ideal set would be a mix.....A2 bridge and A5 neck, only because I like neck pickups more articulate like A5 or A3. The A2 bridge sounds really nice.....tight vintage!

Re: Tell me more about the Anniversary Seths

I'll probably kick myself for saying this but they are in the new MF catalog at a substantial discount from the original price. On your mark, get set, GO!

What I was refering to is that Seymour made an "original" 50th Anniversary model. Then folks complained that they wanted the "other" mag, so they produced those. I was wondering which mag was Seymours "original" concept.

Thats the one I'd like. ;) (Looks like there's still time to snag a set.)

Aha, gotcha. I think I might get a set. But I don't know if I want A2 or A5. I'm going to go back and read the original reviews of these things on here.

Re: Tell me more about the Anniversary Seths

I think it was a Guitar Center/ Musicians Friend disconnect from Duncan Sales and one company was saying A2, the other A5. It was just a mix up. So, to settle all the uproar, they made them in both style magnets.

I've put A5 magnets in my Antiquities. The results were quite different, more ballsy if you will. Funny though, after trying A3's, I ended up going back to A2's and being done with it.

For these Seths', my comment is this...

1. If you want a special limited edition pickup with engraved covers, then these are for you.

2. If you want a stock A5 version of the Seth, these are for you.

3. If you want a plain, "normal" looking A2 Seth, these are not for you.

I'd bet a dollar to a donut that the anniversary A2 Seths are exactly the same as the normal A2 Seths. Identical except for the cover.

Last year at this time, Evan had the very first PAF pickup ever wound displayed at the NAMM show (under glass of course). He actually got to hear it in a guitar. Guess which pup it sounded most like? A normal 59. (A5 magnet)

So, if you want historical accuracy in terms of how that first one sounded, then grab an A5 Annie Seth and you're there. (that is if you trust Evan's ears)

Re: Tell me more about the Anniversary Seths

What's now cool is that they are selling for the same price as normal seths. I don't really dig the engraved cover, but that's a personal choice. If they only made 150 sets of each and MF is still selling them at "normal" price, I'm guessing they didn't sell too well.

A2, just like regular Seths and Antiquities

just a couple comments:

as Gearjoneser mentioned, the Anniversary models are slightly hotter than regular Seths - maybe a few hundred more turns, like the Antiquity specs. Since he's tried both, I'll take his word that the difference is hardly noticeable.

I do remember Evan's comments about the original Seth, and the fact that the '59 sounded closest - especially since I guessed the Seth would be closest :)

to me, that just proves the '59 is one of the best deals out there
