the one on the left is gorgeous! how do you like it? About how much would it cost me for one like that?
The one on the left.....you can't see it in the pic but it's actually pretty highly flamed on the top and the back is clear with a gorgeous tight grain to it.
When I got it this past Spring I wasn't all that wild about it. Mainly because a few weeks earlier I had gotten my black one and was really settling in to it. The pickups were a little brighter than the other and a few "undocumented" nicks put me off; I was pretty dissapointed over minor things.
As a result I put it away in a case until this past October. For some reason it just struck me to take it out and put 11's on it and make a final decision whether I was going to keep it or not. I figured I would give it a few months and see what I thought.
I didn't really take to it until this past month. Since it's brighter than the black one I kept on trying to play it like that one, and it just wasn't happening. One day it just clicked and I had the EQ right and started thinking differently about what sounds I could get out of it.
Suddenly it just kind of came alive and made sense to me tonally. Ever since its been making big steps to being one of my faves.
I'm sheepish to talk money on it, but I'm not going to lie. I think I spent $320 on it. It was an eBay auction and at the time there were a few sellers selling a ton of gorgeously flamed tops so it got lost a bit in the shuffle. I put a bid on it late at night not expecting to win. A few days later I got the email that I had and kind of regretted it; I really didn't need two but for the price I couldn't really argue with it. Shipped from Japan was a hundred bucks so $420 total.
It was a bit of a diamond in the rough. It had been rode hard and put away wet; I spent two hours cleaning it up before putting a set of 10's on it and actually hearing what it really sounded like.
I've never seen another one on eBay though. Grecos are pretty regular; there's dealers with a couple on at most times but I've not seen another with a flamed red top to it. I'm certain they're out there though.
