Hey Guys.

In a week, I'm done with school and I'll reward myself by renting a Tenor Sax. After listening to John Coltrane and Steely Dan, I want to play it like no other. The vocal sound of it and the phrasing that can be achieved just really attracts.

I listened to this song "FM - No static at all" by Steely Dan, and it has a really hip sax solo in there. I want to emulate that sound.

Does anyone here jazz it up with the sax?

Which horns to stay away from?

More importantly does anyone know whats the best way to learn the scales and the controls on the sax ASAP? Any online sites or maybe books would help.

I play alto sax, but don't know much about what horns are good or bad....

Just an interesting aside: There are actually two versions of "FM," one with a sax solo and another with a guitar solo. Guess which one I like better. :)

Hey Alex. How did you learn the sax? Any books or material you can recommend? What's an easy way to learn?

well, i play it in the school band, so thats how I learned.
(thinks)

the essential elements 2000 series of books is a what i've been using my first 2 years of playing. So I would say you check those out.

If I were u , i'd start w/ the alto. (cheaper to rent, smaller, easier to blow @ 1st, etc) Rent a Bundy, by Selmer if u can. They're very sturdy beginner saxes, & sound very good. Try to find John Kinyon's "Basic Training Method" Book. It's a beginner book, but even for an experienced musician, doing extremely beginner type exercises is essential when learning a new instrument, in order to get some of the techniques down.

i gots me on o' those(its old and cratched up, but it works)
and i tried playing my dads tenor before i started playing my alto, and i couldn't get much sound.
but then again, i was only 11 then....

It's on the compilation album "A Decade of Steely Dan," which is available all over the place and for download on iTunes. Walter Becker does the guitar solo.

I'll do just that then.

Are the key systems the same on Alto and Tenor saxes? (So when I switch to Tenor i don't have to re-learn...) Also the Soprano sax (the straight one...) is that higher than the Tenor? (I just think it looks way cool)

Tenor Sax is a Bb instrument.
Alto sax is Eb.
No problem switching between them though, because the fingerings and keys (buttons) are the same on both.
