Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

I had an interesting experience today that I thought I might tell you all about.

There's a local boutique shop about 30 miles from me called Tone Merchants in the city of Orange. They're an awesome shop... extremely knowledgeable, low pressure staff that understand music and gear as tools for a lifestyle and not just a sales point. They have a web page and several videos on youtube.

Today, I went there and tried out a few hi-caliber amps just to see what was available and if anything really tickled my fancy. Something did, but it wasn't what I expected...

I initially wandered in there to test a Custom Audio Amplifiers CA100, as they usually keep one in stock. I've debated selling my Bogner and buying one of these several times. They're loud, smooth, bold, powerful amps that sound pretty amazing. Vintage Fendery cleans with a modern-sounding drive section. Forum bro samhillband (Mark Day) has one and makes excellent use of it, as seen on his YouTube demo vids. The controls are very straightforward and yield an excellent range of tones... you really can't get a bad sound out of this amp.

They didn't have one in the shop but they did have the PT100 model... it's a variant of the CA100 that was designed for Peter Thorn. It was built with a 3rd channel (instead of the normal two) and voiced for more mids and highs, and given Plexi transformers and EL34s. After spending about a half hour with it, I found that while I really dug the clean channel, the drive channels were a little too bright and cutting and strident for me, and I preferred the fatter, smoother sound of the CA100. Excellent amp, but not for me - too bright overall, especially on the drive channels.

Next, I moved on to a Bogner Uberschall Twin Jet. Having never tried either Uberschall incarnation before, I was looking forward to this. Unfortunately, I wound up not really liking the amp as much as I'd hoped I would. The clean sounds were OK but not great, and the medium-gain settings were somewhat lackluster. The hi-gain settings, which are supposed to be the amp's selling point, were the best tones the amp had to offer, but had a tad too little definition, and were too compressed and saturated for my taste. The amp also had a lot of bass available to it that would've been unusable in a band context. The problem is, you had to be careful when dialing it down or else you'd lose the body of the sound.

It was at that moment the owner of Tone Merchants, Ron, walked in and greeted me. He asked me if there was anything I needed and that eventually led to a discussion about tone, gear, etc. The kind of thing you'd expect. We talked about the Uberschall and I told him it wasn't really doing anything for me. He commented that this amp usually sounds best with brighter-sounding 7-string guitars, as the low end and high headroom was designed to acommodate those guitars.

He asked me more about my current rig and what i was after, what I liked and what i didn't like, and listened carefully. After thinking for a bit, he led me to another amp I may have not looked at otherwise.

It looked like a new Marshall JMP clone with an extra knob, it had no logo on it. It was a Dave Friedman amp called the Naked.

It belonged to Ron (who was running the shop with Jay, their YouTube demo guy/salesman/tech today). It's his personal amp but he's using it on the floor to sell that model, and has had a few orders placed since NAMM. I've heard of Dave's amps before and knew that Jerry Cantrell is currently using his "Marsha" amp, but nothing beyond that. Ron explained that the Naked was designed and built for Billy Howerdel, and now Dave is putting them into production as built-to-order amps. Billy has the first pre-production units, Dave has the prototype, and the first production model is sitting in one of the Loud Rooms at Tone Merchants.

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

Rather than go into further explanation, he plugged me into a cab, and dialed in a setting and said, "Try this out for a bit, I think you might like this. Come get me in my office if you have a question."

I was impressed with what I heard. REALLY impressed. What i got right out of the gate was basically my rhythm tone on my Bogner's red channel, but it was a less compressed, more open/percussive, smoother version of it. The tone seemed purer somehow.

It had that old Marshall bloom as I opened up the volume, but the tone remained tighter and more controlled and smoother than any Marshall I've ever tried. On my Bogner, I've always had a little bit of a difficult time getting the mids to sit in the right spot and usually ran the mids on 4 or 5... on this amp I was able to open them up to about 7 and hit just the right sweet spot for what I like and really get some happening tones going on.

The feel of the amp was totally different from what I'd expected... very fluid and FAST. The amp sounded very open and uncompressed, but it didn't feel that way. It remained very touch-responsive with a lightning-fast attack and made quick little legato runs and the like very easy, yet retained the edge needed to make palm mutes as chunky and percussive as needed.

Ron came back in after about 15 minutes and we discussed the amp further... as it turned out, there's a second channel in the amp accessed by a 1-button footswitch. It's voiced differently and has much lower gain, and it sounded nice and even and clear. Not a Fender, but still very, very nice and it would more than get the job done for the type of cleans I use. A nice, clear, even EL34 type clean with some spank on it. Then there's the FX loop on the back... oh yeah, and it sounded just as good at speaking-level volume as well.

It was just so neat... the tone that I had to dial in really carefully with the Bogner with all it's switches and knobs was just THERE the moment I opened up the Naked, but without as much compression and a mids voicing that was more my style. It did vintage Van Halen, Metallica, and Alice In Chains with pretty equal facility. Definitely a ballsy hard rock amp for sure. I played with this amp for about an hour and a half total, and I found that this amp relied more on player input and less on controls to manipulate the sound, which I liked. But what was more is that this amp was so simple and yet so much FUN. Another great thing about it was that it wasn't fatiguing to the ears after sustained gig-level volume. I pointed this out to Ron, and he agreed with me, and also said that this amp, to him, was like a more controllable Wizard Vintage Classic that was much less expensive and didn't tire your ears out as fast.

I'm not gonna say that this is IT for me, but this amp has a LOT going for it and I will have to seriously re-evaluate my Bogner. I started out with the Bogner wanting a certain tone, and at the time, the Bogner was the best, simplest way to that tone, but it still required a fair amount of tweaking.

In spite of my tweaker nature, I like very straight-ahead amps. Most of the amps that get tones I like just happen to be more complex. This one is not. I think I may have found an easier path to what I feel is my sound, and a slightly more enjoyable version of it at that. At the very least, a shootout is in order.

...before I left, I also had the opportunity to try out a Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra. They had it wired up going into two JBL powered speaker cabs designed for a PA. My impressions in a nutshell:

VERY cool unit. Sounds very, very good, and could hang with MANY high-quality tube rigs. Some of the patches sound more convincing than others, but they all sound pretty good. It doesn't react quite as well as a really good tube amp does to playing dynamics, but I've also heard many, many tube amps that don't sound anywhere near this good or were not as responsive. A high-powered POD this is most definitely NOT. It's light-years ahead of anything Line 6 has. The effects are all very good, especially in stereo, which was how i tried it. This thing is a session player's dream and definitely has a place in the recording studio. I could definitely see myself recording an EP with this instead of a real amp. All the good things you've heard are true. It won't put the tube amp industry out of business, but it's a very viable option - and for some may even be preferable - over using a real tube rig.

Thanks for a great review! You got to spend and hour and a half playing through an amp that sounded and felt right and wasn't overly compressed and didn't require half an hour of tweaking to dial in ....... that's called a vacation!

What sort of cab were you playing through?

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

ya for me a sign of a good amp is when you can sit down and have a decent sound within a few seconds... if you really have to play with the dials it drives me nuts....

that is the huge difference between the 5150 and my Marshall TSL-100... the 5150 sounds great the second i turn it on and the amp's controlls make it sound better.... my TSL-100 takes a bit of time to dial in the sound and each and every guitar with simular specs i plug into the front of it i have to play with the dials to re-adjust everything.... weird sensitive amp...

i just find an amp that you can get great sounds out of faster is a better amp...

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

Thanks for writing all of that up. I've been aware of Dave Friedman since I started listening to those massive pickup and amp shootouts that are on line somewhere (I forget). The guy that does them always uses some Friedman modded stuff - usually called the Brown Eye or some ****.

ok I looked around and found what I'm talking about. Here's the amp shootout:

Killer story... Tone Merchants sounds like my kind of place. I just need $$$$ and to live about 2000 miles closer

Did you run the amps at pretty high volume (sweet spots) at Tone Merchants? It seems like that would be the kind of place that would allow you to really try an amp...

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

"I found that this amp relied more on player input and less on controls to manipulate the sound"

Sounds like you were just revisiting JCM 900 and before Marshall amps. Those amps demanded player input, if you suck, it's immediately apparent. No ultra high gain to cover up sloppiness

If you get a chance, try out a Framus Dragon, best 3 channel head ever made IMO

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

As soon as you mentioned 'Naked,' I thought of Howerdel and APC... and now I'm REALLY curious.

How much do these puppies run, bychance?

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

Sounds like a fun time that proves that a great core tone edges out tweakability.

I played the PT100 and the Naked through a 4x12 loaded with G75 and H75 Scumbacks (2 each). The Bogner I demoed through it's own 4x12, the Uberkab.

Excellent review. Looking forward to seeing pics of your new amp. :)

HA. I wish... didn't buy it but it may be a possibility in the future.

Yup! That's the shop! Those were some killer demos too. I haven't played a Brown Eye in person but from the clips, the Naked seemed fatter sounding.

Yep, they have two "Loud Lounges" for auditioning the big amps, and you can crank 'em up and go to town. All of these amps I demoed were at about 5 to 7 on the volume knob. The Bogner and the PT100 were too loud for that level for most clubs but the Naked sounded about right at home there.

Yep, no matter what amp you play, it's gonna be suck in -> suck out, but the Naked really did facilitate and reward you if you played well.

$3500. Dave hand builds 'em one at a time so there's a $1000 deposit required and the current lead time is two months. I'd have to sell my Bogner and my Axis to get one, but this amp sounds like it might be worth it.

As the owner said, he'd rather spend $3500 on the Naked than spend $5000 on a Wizard Vintage Classic, which sounds very similar and tires your ears out within 10 minutes.

Sounds like a fun time that proves that a great core tone edges out tweakability.

True. There's something to be said for how much fun a peice of gear is to play with, and moreover, having a great core tone kind of doesn't really require major tweakability, or so I've found.

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

Damn, now that is a review! Great read, as well. Damn...now I want one!

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

Good review, and it's proof that you can't always assume what you like, till you really try a bunch of good amps side by side.

The problem is always the damm price tag. And of course, the newest hippest thing is never on the used market - just sitting in the store for the price of a used car plus tax.

My inclination will always be to keep the Bogner XTC and cabs, but shuffle other amps in and out. I'm getting to the point of cashing out of the Matchless and Gibson amps I have, to replace them with an amp that excites me once again.

Keep your eye on So Ca's Craigslist. There's a lot of quality stuff being dumped cheap. I've run into some serious holy grail amps on there lately.

Reminds me of an amp i heard once....... Can't remember the brand, but they are Black with white writing. I think Jimi Hendrix, Jimi page, Kirk Hammett or Eddie Van Halen might have used them.

Re: Tested some REALLY cool amps today...

Maybe you know...is Tone Merchants the only place to buy the Friedman amps??

Not sure... the only place I've run into locally that does, that's for sure. Tone merchants usually runs their NAMM booth with Dave, and the owner of TM and Dave have each other on speed dial, so they have a close business relationship, I'd wager.

I suppose if you really wanted to know, the best way to be to call or email Dave and ask where else he deals through.

I check Craigslist pretty regularly, if only to see what's available. I din't think the Naked would be the type to show up on CL if one did become available. eBay or TGP maybe, though.

I'm taking my Bogner in on Friday to have the footswitch fixed and while they're at it, I'll have them open up the amp and check the bias and all just to make sure everythings cool. I bought the amp 2 years ago and have never looked under the hood, so to speak.

Oh no! To be stabbed through the heart with your rapier-like wit! :laugh2:

I'm very familiar with and have played old Marshalls and modded Marshalls before, and this amp - while being based off of a JMP, had a lot more refinement going on underneath the hood. It wasn't just the tone, it was how tight and controlled and responsive it was as well. Seriously cool amp, and geared for a bit more of a modern, smoother, gainier sound.
