Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...

...not bad!

I recently purchased a 2x12 AB Audio cab from DracoAran, and the cab came with WGS Veteran 30's in it gave them a spin tonight in rehearsal and heard some pretty good stuff!!

After being dissatisfied with Celestions current V30s, I started using Eminence Governors, which to me are like V30s with more bass and without that annoying spike in the mids. Very full, smooth sounding speaker.

The WGS Veteran 30's are closer to the actual V30s, but without that mid spike, and they have more bass than the Celestions but not as much as the Emis do. Additionally, the bass response is much faster and tighter than either the Emis or the Celestions. The Emis are no slouch in that department, but the WGS's have this lightning fast, extremely tight bass response to them that makes fast riffy stuff with palm mutes a real treat to play.

All in all, a very solid choice for a V30 lover who wants a tighter, bassier take on the sound. Nice stuff!

Good speakers at a fine price indeed. He actually sells some really pricey ones too though. Whether they're worth it or not I don't honestly care to find out. I've no need for a Blackhawk.:dunno:

I know, right?

I mean, I'm sure those speakers sound great and all, but they're not for my purposes and the day I start spending $234 a pop on a single speaker is the day when I won't have to worry about money, and that's a while from now. ;)

I think i might sell one of these Veteran 30's and get an HM75 or an ET65, because I love mixing and matching speakers.

Re: Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...

I like the Veteran 30s. I have three of them in my 6x12.

The other three speakers are ET65s, and it's a nice blend.

Yeah i recall you saying that in another thread.

I'm more a fan of the V30/G12T75 mix, but lately I've been wanting to mess with ET65s or even G12K100s. I posted a thread asking about the latter but didn't get any useful responses.

I admit that I've lost track of what Celestion the ET65s are supposed to emulate.

I have the Emi Governer/Man O War (v30/G12T75) mix in my Splawn cab and that thing sounds phenomenal. The V30/ET65 combo is a bit darker and less-compressed overall, though part of that could be due to the huge amount of airspace in the 6x12 enclosure.

The ET65's were supposed to be G12-65 clones, IIRC.

Re: Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...

I have a pair of the Vet 30's and one is currently in my Fender Prosonic combo. I tried a Vintage 30 but it was painfully bright and harsh in that open back combo:eyecrazy:. The Vet however is thick and smooth:cool2:. I'm a BIG WGS fan and think the Vet 30 flat nukes the current Chinese made Vintage 30 at just over half the price.

V30s to me sound pretty nasty - not in a good way - with the wrong amps and pretty good with the right amps.

These Vet 30's just sounded pretty durn good right off the bat.

Ah, just wait another twenty years and those Vintage 30s will be good to go.

Re: Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...

Slightly off-topic: anybody compare the Governor to the Tonker? What are the differences? Thanks!

Re: Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...

The Veteran's are very good speakers B, agreed.

I have some of the originals that were still called the "Vintage" model. WGS was forced to rename the speakers to the "Veteran" early on. They have served me well over the 3 or more years I have had them. They are likely the closest speaker to the Vintage 30 without the downside that some hear in the Vintage 30.

Very worthy speakers imo.

Re: Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...

There is also a WGS speaker that is like the Veteran but is a bit brighter called the "Retro 30". Their configuration of the speaker yields 75 watts of power handling with the Retro 30.

Re: Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...

Thanks for the review.

I've been thinking about replacing the speakers in my Crate Vintage Club with Veteran-30's. The Greenback clones sound great also. Maybe I'll mix the two.

Re: Tested some WGS Veteran 30's in rehearsal tonight...
