Texas Hot, Surfer, and SSL-5 combo POLARITY HELP

I want to install a Texas Hot in neck, Surfer in the middle and an SSL-5 in the bridge.

I've read about the Texas Hot and Surfers having different polarities, so which exact pickups (RW/RP or not) do I need to have the middle pickup in reverse polarity? And do I need to specially configure the pick leads?

Re: Texas Hot, Surfer, and SSL-5 combo POLARITY HELP

The middle pup needs to be Reverse wound revers polarity (RWRP) to get humbucking in positions 2 & 4.

Nope the Texas Hot is North leading so IS RW RP to the others the normal RW RP must be in the neck if you want the combo to hum cancel. I just went through it when i put a Texas Hop in the Bridge with a pair of Alnico II Pros.

Thanks, this was exactly the answer I was looking for. Do I need to wire the leads any differently or is it just plug and play with the Neck being RW/RP?

Codes wire the same it's that north leading thing that is confusing just means the Texas Hots are the opposite in polarity than normal Duncans phase is the same.

Actually, my post is generally correct...in order to have hum bucking in positions 2 and 4, the middle pup has to be RWRP to the neck and bridge pups.

But I'm confused. The Texas Hot middle pup is RWRP, but the OP is wanting the Texas Hot NECK pup. Correct? And the Surfer middle pup is also RWRP, which is the pup that the OP wants. So with that combo he has hum cancelling in pos 4. The SSL-5 bridge pup is standard wind and polarity (when purchased in a set, the middle pup is RWRP) so when in position 2 he will get hum cancelling as well.

Are you saying that ALL three of the T.H. pups are RWRP to Duncan's "standard" Strat pups? So that an SSL-1 neck and a Texas Hot neck will be RWRP to each other?

That’s my understanding. From a magnetic polarity standpoint:
Texas Hot “Neck” and Custom Bridge = Surfer Middle
Texas Hot Middle = Surfer “Neck” & Custom Bridge

The Texas Hot and Twangbanger have created more confusion than all the other Duncans combined it seems.

Yes that s exactly what am saying that is why they are listed as being "North leading" not the normal South they are completely bassakards in magnetic polarity to every other Duncan single I have ever used. Had to swap the normally RW/RP Alnico II Pro I had in the middle on my strat to the neck and normally standard wind to the middle to get humbucking with the Antiquity Texas Hot I put in the bridge as a result. Phase stayed the same though.
Yes it is absolutely confusing but that the way it is!!

Wow, Seymour!! What's up with that? Purposely trying to see how confused you can get us?

Re: Texas Hot, Surfer, and SSL-5 combo POLARITY HELP

I wonder if that was originally done because they were intended to be direct drop-in pups for a Strat and be consistent with other Fender pup wiring.

According to a blog on this site:

The most common scenario in which the above comes to bear is when combining Seymour Duncan single coils and Fender single coils. It all started when Seymour decided to base his single coils on the original Fender single coils from the 1950’s, which were south, top going. At some point in the 60’s, Fender decided to change their single coils to be north, top coming. The end result is that Seymour’s regular pickups are equivalent to Fender’s RWRP, and vise versa. The only exception to this is the Antiquity Texas Hot; that’s because it’s an accurate re-creation of the “new” style of Fender pickup.

Re: Texas Hot, Surfer, and SSL-5 combo POLARITY HELP

Well, there you have it.

We all would like consistent wiring (including color codes) from manufacturer to manufacturer, but we can't even get it WITHIN a manufacturer.
