Texas Hot/Surfer/Surfer An Immediate Hit!

Lew as usual was dead on again... :laugh2:

Just finished putting another Texas Hot in the bridge of one of my Highway 1 alder bodied/maple neck strats with a Surfer in the middle and neck...This is a great setup and here's why...

The neck and middle Surfer pickups give me the brighter, chimier tones I Like from their respsective positions....The mids are perfect in those spots with the A5 magnets...These 2 positions also seem to slightly tighten things up,especially in the needed neck position...The Surfers in the neck and middle are my favorites...

The Texas Hot in the bridge position is the ultimate marriage for me in bridge position strat tone...This pickup always pleases me right away...The A2 gives the strat more mids, still plenty of chime and highend, but not as "planky" or present as a Surfer bridge..I Like the way the A2 poles help bring out what some strats lack in the bridge position, and that's a bit more mids and more overall lows without taking any of the needed note articulation away...

The 4th position is great also(Bridge/Middle) in that there's some extra mids or lower mids mixed in that beefs the 4th spot up a tad...Still very "Sultan's of Swingish" tone there, but there's some extra girth in the mids..

This Texas Hot in the bridge is also great with gain in that it seems to smooth out, isn't ice picky and I always love how smooth this pickup responds just by slightly knocking the tone control back...I've loved these Texas Hots from day one,but now I have a wonderful mix of Surfers and Texas Hots to color my tone with...

I Pulled a Twangbanger out and put the Texas Hot in it's place....I Love the Twangbanger alot, but it's just not a true sounding vintage strat bridge pickup and the 4th position tones, though good, aren't great...The Texas Hot always fullfills what I like about the "correct" sounding strat bridge pickup...

Special thanks to my buddy Lew....This guy always manages to steer me in the right direction and always gives me great prices on my pickup and guitar needs....Thanks to Lew and everyone else that tipped me to try this combination and helped me install them correctly on the first shot at it..

This particular strat is going to get the most play...After that,my red American Deluxe that has a full set of Texas Hots is a tie with this strat...If something sounds that good to me right away,I Know I've got the right pickups in there.....WeeeeeeeHoooo......

Re: Texas Hot/Surfer/Surfer An Immediate Hit!

Thanks for your take, John. Looks like there might some Surfers in my future.
I can't imagine anything sounding better to my ears than the Texas Hots/Custom set-up, but even if there's something close or equal, I suppose I need to try'em. Glad you're diggin' them.

Peace,

Darrin

Whew... :smack:

What a relief! :)

Glad you like 'em. I have that set in my Strat that gets played the most.

I rarely play my '63 Strat anymore. All these Antiquitys just sound better to me than the three 6K vintage alnico 5 pickups in my old Strat.

But I think I'm going to pull the bridge pickup and put in a Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup...it needs one!

But of course, :smoker: that's where I got my Hots/Custom set-up & several other pups, pots, caps etc...

Darrin's a bud too, John. And these days I even get his name spelled right! Darrin runs his Strat with those Texas Hots into a Fender tweed Bassman reissue. Lew

Re: Texas Hot/Surfer/Surfer An Immediate Hit!

Lewguitars website said that the Antiquity Surfers got a good Bell Bottom Blues/Sultans of Swing tone. What type of tone Texas Hots (in the neck and middle position) achieve?

Re: Texas Hot/Surfer/Surfer An Immediate Hit!

I agree. I think this is all the result of those Ultimate Strat Tone threads that popped up recently. The Surfers are the best strat pickups I've ever used.
I started with the Surfer neck and middle, along with the Ant I Custom bridge, and it was amazing. Just out of musical necessity though, I decided to use my Surfers next to a tremspaced C-5, just to have the perfect 'superstrat.' It's definitely THAT!

My traditional strat somehow loves Fender Fat 50's. I dunno why, but I can't get those pickups outta my life. I guess it's because they're the fattest sounding Alnico 5 pickups out there. The Surfers still have a more refined and gorgeous tone, tho.
I guess the Fat 50's are just a little ruder, which I like in that sunburst/rosewood strat.

It makes me want another strat, which I don't need. I'm dying to try Surfer neck and middle with a Fralin Steelpole bridge. Are those the same polarity? Will Fralins and Surfers mix?

You should be able to flip flop the hot and ground on the SP Fralin...I had to do that in order to make mine work with a Fat 50 middle and Fat 50 neck...I use the Fat 50s also, and I Like them alot..

Re: Texas Hot/Surfer/Surfer An Immediate Hit!

Thanks. I guess what it comes down to is finding what's best for a particular guitar or a style you intend on using the guitar for. For me, Surfers and Fat 50's have become my favorites. Now, I just need to start selling off the pickups that'll never be reinstalled.

Another too good to leave hidden.

:laugh2: I didn't realize 'til this last post that this was an old thread.

I was about to say . . . John got another killer Strat put together. :32: :laugh2:

Man...Where'd you dig this old thread up from! LOL
As you can see,my tastes change as often as my underwear....;o)

Re: Texas Hot/Surfer/Surfer An Immediate Hit!

I still really, really love the Surfer/Surfer/Texas Hot combo!
Use 'em in my favorite Strat.

The other set I really love is the Surfer/Surfer/CS Tele Hot in my other favorite Strat.

I gave my Strat with the APS-2/APS-2/Twangbanger to my nephew...but I'll probably put something similar in another Strat someday.

I'm not using a Twangbanger in anything at the moment but it's only because I've run out of Strats! :laugh2:
