Hi,

There's a kind of soft or breathy quality to some guitar tones that I've been trying to get at home. An example would be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mh9Q6mxFdg, especially at 1:55 and just after. It's a bit like a piano with the soft pedal down. You can get some of the way there by laying back the pick, but that still isn't giving me same mellowness. Any tips?

Thanks

Practice. It's all in the attack. Also note how he's doing 2-note sliding chords followed by a 3+-note chord right behind it.

Yeah, I’m sure a lot of it is in the hands so practice is going to be the key there.

As for amp settings etc. what I have got so far is:

Neck pickup (I have a strat with fat 50s)
Tone rolled back to 8
Clean channel
Master on full
Gain backed off a little from where it starts to break up
Bass on 10 o’clock
Mid on 2 o’clock
Treble on 11 o’clock

Any advance on that?

Thanks

Re: That 'breathy' tone

I would actually create a mild scoop in the mids for this one. Try bass at 12 treble at 2 and mids at 10. Try full everything on the neck pickup, back off the gain a TOUCH more. I also don't know what amp you're using, so I can't judge TOO well. And yes, pick attack is everything for this one. Also what pick are you using?
