Re: That one thing SS-amps will never get you...
Man, you guys are a bunch of nerds....

So you said I might like a short plate one in the PI, right?
The Sovtek LPS is a long plate aswell if I remember correctly... (haven't used it quite long now)
So which one would you suggest then?

The LPS is also a long plate.
It is not a simple choice as there is more to it than long plate vs short plate. A short plate will generally compress more quickly at the end of it's ability where a long plate will compress more gradually. But you can use either type and pick the tube for factors such as plate output current and transconductance which loosely is the output in gain for a given input signal which is not the same as gain in circuit based on design spec parameters.
How I generally pick these things is swap different tubes in and out of the amp as the player is playing and let them pick as to their personal preference. The tubes I use for this in and out procedure are all of the same design specs so the end user hears the differences in the tube type rather than things being messed up by comparing weak tubes with proper ones.
I see... I'll probably give the LPS a shot tomorrow in the PI position... must have at least a bunch of them left lieing around here.
If you can find somebody handy with any type of tester, even a transconductance tester, have them measure them and see what you find with the tube with the lowest number vs the highest number.
i think it'll be hard to find someone like that over here unfortunately.
