thd attenuator question

im thinking of getting a 16 ohm attenuator to play between my head and cab at 16 ohms. If i wanted to play 2 cabinets (which would be 8 ohm each) do i need a different attenuator? Or just simply switch to 8 on the amp and pluhg in two cables.

thanks

Re: thd attenuator question

Well shoot... I saw the word attenuator and being the owner of a Dr. Z Airbrake I thought I could help. But that thing has two jacks (in and out) and two knobs, and since it fits my needs perfectly, I've forgotten everything I know about THD Hotplates and whatnot. Sorry. Next?

Re: thd attenuator question

Check out a Weber Mass, they have many different models with switchable impendence and lots of other stuff too. Just make sure to get one that is higher wattage than your amp, like for a 50 watter get a 100 watt mass etc. Most tube amps make alot more than their rated wattage when they're cranked. Ted Weber is a real cool guy too, if you call he'll take the time out to chat with you about any of their stuff.

Check out THD website. I think a question such as this is in a FAQ somewhere. If it's not, shoot an email to their customer service. I had a question once, sent them email and they got back to me quick.

Re: thd attenuator question

As I understand it (and I asked THD about this), the ohmage quoted on Hot Plates only relates to the optimization of the Bright and Deep switches, so in theory you can use any Hot Plate with any impedance setting on your amp, PROVIDED YOU MATCH THE IMPEDANCE SETTING ON THE AMP TO THE CORRECT VALUE FOR THE CONNECTED CABS.

If you're connecting two 8 ohm cabs, I think they will be in parallel, therefore resulting in a load of 4 ohms, so you should set the amp's selector at 4 ohms.

Check fully with THD though! I found them to be very helpful.
