Hey guys, i'm looking for a low wattage valve amp with El34's, and i'm wondering if a THD Flexi could do the trick? It's designed to use all kinds of output tubes and most preamp tubes, and it only puts out about 17 watts A\B....

So, anyone tried this sucker? I will be using it wide open, full crank, at a lower gain setting with a distortion pedal in front :13:

Cheers!

I believe you're thinking of the THD Univalve.

No, i'm talking about the Flexi 50 ;). Sorry i was thinking about the wattage rating of the univalve :p im a bit lost in my head these times!

Re: THD Flexi anyone?!

Is Vox stuff priced moderately where you live? If so, you might be able to get a good deal on one of the new Chinese made Vox heads. I'm just suggesting that because they sound real good, and may be a better deal than aquiring a THD in Norway.

Well, i suppose the THD is the best deal i can get around here, and it seems to suit my needs perfectly too :). A THD Flexi costs about $2700 here, which i find not so bad, considering the prices of other amps...... :p

Thanks mate!

Re: THD Flexi anyone?!

I've read numerous articles about them and everyone seems to love them. I just didnt like the sound of it. I cant put my finger on it, but it sounded somewhat thin. But you should try it out for yourself, though. You might like it.

Yeah, listening to the soundclips they sound very marshall-plexi ish, d'oh :smack: , it's that bitey thinnish sound.......

Maybe they'll sound better with a pair of EL34's, and at full crank, with some lower gain preamp tubes and a distortion pedal? :)

Re: THD Flexi anyone?!

That is the cool thing about the amp, though. You can use almost anything in them. I would just freak out and buy a new set of tubes as soon as I could afford it, to try out new combinations.

Plexi thin??
Hehehe then my Hiwatt is a bloody Fender Champ;)
Have you heard Ed's clips with it??
He gets some fat mofo sounds out of it.

Hehe mate, don't get me wrong ;)... my understanding of a really FAT tone is when you don't need to put butter on your toast, you just hold it infront of the cab a couple of secs :D

Yeah, Van Halen's tone was great.... still a bit too bitey for my taste :).

Cheers!

Re: THD Flexi anyone?!

I had the opportunity to talk to THD's Andy Marsahll at length and try one out at a trade show. I was pretty impressed. Reminded me of a nice 50 watt plexi with a bit more bottom. I very much like the idea of being able to use pretty much any tube in any combination, too.

The univalve is a great little piece for low wattage use, too.

Re: THD Flexi anyone?!

I tried one at NAMM last year. It was very cool in a Plexi-like way. Amazing transient attack and crunch. That said, they need to be played LOUD to sound good. That was definitely a deal breaker for me.

But it does have a 50\20 watt switch doesnt it? And also, i'll be playing at full volume, we have a almost 7 feet tall black guy as a drummer :burnout:

But 20 tube watts are VERY loud indeed.... what about using a lower gain preamp tube?
