The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

A little update since you guys where so kind to answer my questions.
Received the pickup- installed the pickup- burned my finger on the soldering iron- got a big smile on my face when playing the '59!
This thing is very open, very articulate and enough oomph for the music i play, just what i was looking for.
Can't wait for the sh-2 to arrive and install it, hopefully without burning my finger again

Its just a flesh wound....Nothing to worry about!

Monty Python?

Seriously, PAF-style humbuckers are te most versatile. Just match them with the appropriate amplification. My Epiphone Lucille is in the process of receiving SD Brobucker and Pearly Gates pickups.

I did try a higher output bridge position HB. I gained power and lost versatility.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

Congrats on your pleasure with the '59b. After you get the SH-2 in you may find you need to tweak everything to get the total package you want. Mag swaps are a great fine-tuning tool if you need it, and it's cheap and easy to do.

Keep in touch when you get the other pup in and let us know how it sounds.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

So I installed the jazz, i really think they match well. Selecting both pickups with the tone and volume dimed a bit sounds very good with a touch of gain.
Soloing on the jazz gives a nice tone, clean is adorable.
I'm happy, think they will stay in my guitar!

Didn't burn any fingers but really, soldering is a dreadful job.
I have 2 left hands by the way...

Bet that make playing guitar a bit tricky.

Sounds like you've got yourself a winner. Enjoy your "new" guitar.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

The 59B/JazzN is a great set for ultimate clarity and tone. If you asked Seymour himself what his favorite pickups are, he'd point you toward these before he'd even mention the hot pickups Duncan sells.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

The fun is decreasing, after playing it for a while i've noticed a strange almost metallic sound on the A and the D string by the 12th fret.
I noticed it while playing the epic riff of sunshine of your love.
It happens when i let go of the string, i started hammering it and everytime there's a metallic sound.
Could it be i soldered it bad, or could it be harmonics?
Since it's on the 12th fret i thought it could be something like that.
I've uploaded a file, take a listen. Last part is hammering the strings on the 11th and 12th fret.

Sounds like harmonic ring to me, could be because you have a quality pup now and it picks up everything. I had the same thing with my GFS V59b I lowered the pup until it quit, you could just have the pup set to high and it will pick up every little thing your fingers do on that neck. Try lowering it a little at a time, if it doesn`t go away then you need the frets dressed from there up. I just picked up a SD 59n on ebay and can`t wait to slap it in and compare it to the GFS. The 59 PAF has really became my favorite pup.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

Ok i'll give that a go. About the frets, it would really surprise me that the frets need to be dressed.
I had it set-up by a tech a month ago, he checked the frets and said the neck is in top shape.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

This ain't working, lowering doesn't make the sound go away.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

Hmmm,, have tried to lighten your touch ? I could be wrong but that ring really sounds like harmonic ring to me,, the pup sounds great from your clip I don`t really think it has a problem.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

Lightening my touch helps a bit but doesn't completely eliminate it.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

at first i thought it was a natural 12th fret harmonic but it sounds like there's something else going on...
this approach borders on superstition but may help isolate the problem; when you next change strings, give everything a good clean, lower all pickups right down and then gradually bring them back up again, starting at the neck.
let us know if you've still got that ringing.

you bought this pickup used, right?

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

Yes indeed, i bought it used. If i have the chance i'll replace strings today.

Could you please post a recording of the all 6 string played clean one by one in the position where they ring, maybe with a compressor? It seems an overtone but it could be a string touching next fret too, the distortion make it unclear.

First part is the neck pickup, second part is the bridge.
I think i hear it slightly with the neck too, could be me going mad also.
Just had contact with the previous owner, he said if i'm not happy with it i can return it.
He doesn't understand it also.
Going to see a guitartech this week, if he doesn't solve it i'll return it and order a new one.

Re: The 59 bridge humbucker, some questions.

I would check the bridge as well when you change strings, if its a wired ABR it could be a loose wire, or possibly a screw on 1 of the saddles vibrating a hair. Best to check everything in the path all at once.
