The 78 is guitar specific sometimes

I can't keep enough 78's on the shelf. I guess people coming to me for VH type parts means I'm going to move a lot of them. They do sound great. I will say though that I built both guitars in this picture and the 78 sounded better with the Floyd Setup Franky than the Original Setup. I used a custom wound pup for the Original and it sounded way better. It really depends on the guitar obviously.

I've really been interested in the '78 pickups... I've thought about picking one up, but I haven't read many reviews on them.

It's a great pickup, but I think you have to definitely have the setup for it to get everything out if it that it offers. It sounded muddy in the Original Setup Franky, but screamed in the Floyd (red/white/black) setup Franky.

That's good to know-- I was considering the 78 in a hardtail EVH type strat. After what you said, I'm thinking it might sound muddy in a hardtail strat.

Did you switch the pickups to make sure it's the guitars and not the pickups that make the difference?

I went through a few different pickups in each guitar and both guitars respond differently to different pups. The 78 (9k) in the end sounded best in the b/w/r and my custom wind (7.82k) sounded best in the b/w Franky. Both guitars feel and play perfectly and I spent a considerable amount of time building both from scratch finding what sounded best in them.
