OK, which guitar in the poll above would be the one you would put into a time capsule for people a thousand years from now. It would need to represent everything about Rock N Roll culture. The main rule here is that you can only pick ONE guitar.

I pick the Les Paul. I think it is the epitome of rock guitar both in tone and aesthetics. :smoker:

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

either pages paul or a strat with a reversed headstock(you said rock n roll!!!)

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

I'm not so big on them myself...but the Strat deserves it. It defines a guitar's purpose and voice.

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

The Strat, man -- it was the first really affordable rock guitar, and it has literally defined the genre.

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

i don't like les pauls, i dont play les pauls, i think les pauls are ugly.

BUT id go les paul, that is THE rock guitar.

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

That's a tough one. Rock, like almost anything else, is subject to trends and what's "fashionable." Nowadays it seems Strats are very unfashionable. And judging by the general tone of many of the folks on the FDP, Strats seem to be the axe of choice for old folks who have one foot in the grave. It's amazing how stuffy and "set in their ways" many of the Strat folks on the FDP sound. "That's not a true Strat sound! Where's the twang and quack?!" I dunno about you but I wouldn't use words like "twang" and "quack" to describe any kind of rock or agressive sounding music.

But in spite of that, I'd have to vote Stratocaster. Looking back to the golden age of rock, the Strat through a Marshall pretty much defined what rock was. And I hope I don't come across like an old FDP codger, but I have yet to be really impressed by any musical trend of the last 20 years or so. With the sexy, agressive look and versatility of the Strat, you just can't beat it.

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

The tele, or should i say the Broadcaster was the first electric (I think) but I picked the strat because it is probably the most used of all models and such a versatile guitar. If the poll had asked what guitar best defines rock's sound, then definietly the LP.

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

Les Pauls are like everything rock n roll is about. Sex? Look at them. Excess? Look at the price tag and some of the tops they put on them. Rock? Listen to them. Les Paul + Marshall = the rock tone.

Ditto ... But I would change it to Les Paul + Marshall = International Symbol of Rock

Even the most dimwitted individual knows what that combo is.

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

For me, the icon of rock'n'roll is the archtop hollowbody... Just think of it, they were there before and that's with them that this whole thing got started... The les paul just happened to be used a lot more later... It is contemporary but not the icon for me when regarding rock'n'roll...

Someone has a memory that goes back beyond the 60's :) Chuck Berry wasn't duck-walkin' with a LP. These guys were playing archtops, and to a lesser extent, Fenders. The Les Paul was actually designed and marketed as a jazz instrument which was discontinued after 1960 due to poor sales. Early British invasion bands weren't using LPs either (although there are probably some exceptions) It wasn't until the mid-60's that the LP came into it's own as a rock/blues guitar. Beck, Clapton, Keef, and later Page. If I could only have one guitar, it might be a LP, but as for picking the definitive R&R geetar, I'd agree with Surgeon....hollowbody. They've been rockin' since day one :smokin:

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

I'd say the Strat but like the Les Paul, it'll be utterly useless unless you put an amp in that time capsule. For that reason, I'd say put Elvis' Martin D-28 in there instead... Lew

Re: The Ambassador Guitar of Rock N Roll

Telecaster: Not as much as the Strat.
V: Too metal.
Explorer: Too uncommon.
Hollow Bodies: More jazz and blues.
Firebird: Too uncommon.
Jaguar/Mustang/Jazzmaster: Sorry, no...
Other: There's an other???

What I left out of that list? The Les Paul, Strat, and SG.

I'm a les paul guy.

But I voted for the SG.

And I would vote for the Strat before the Les Paul.

The Les Paul is the best design out of the three in my opinion, but way more people in rock have used the strat. The les paul is elitist. With reason! But it is. But the SG has the gibson tone and is seen as a poor man's les paul.... it's the most rock guitar out of the punch, again IMO.
