The Apples in Stereo -- how to get that sound?

I used to post here semi-regularly a little over a year ago, but I can't seem to find my account, so I've made a new one...

Anyway, the thing that brings me back is that I've gotten back into recording and I've been working on a fun little power-pop project (St. G and the Holy Holies) with influences like The Raveonettes, Squeeze, Atom and His Package, Holly and the Italians, The dBs, etc...and one group whose work I've REALLY been enjoying and trying to emulate is The Apples in Stereo.

But I can't seem to get the guitar sound right.

If someone who is familiar with them could point me in the right direction (my best guess right now: Tele through a Big Muff...) I'd sure appreciate it.

Welcome back to the board! They wiped the board back in March so your username is gone. I'm a big fan of the Raveonettes, very underrated and talented. I'm not familiar with the Apples, so I can't help there. Post some clips when you have them.

Re: The Apples in Stereo -- how to get that sound?

Well, I went looking for some clips of the Apples, and their website has videos that answer part of the question: one guitarist uses a strat and the other a Danelectro. It's the Dano's tone that is the more compelling of the two most of the time, and the video for "Please" shows him stomping on an effects box, but I can't tell what it is.

The site address is http://applesinstereo.com/new/ . I can't seem to direct link to the videos page, so click on "A/V" and then "Videos."

I know one of the pedals is a Big Muff, but I'm not sure what the other one is in the guitarist's chain. It looks rather strange to me, perhaps someone else knows?

It deffinately looks like Electro-Harmonix, whatever it is...I should be more familiar with EH, alas, I am not.
I can see a Big Muff on the right, but I can't see what the other one is. The sound quality is not really good enough for me to pick it out either. I'm sure someone can pick it out for you, lots of EH useres here.

No kidding...they've got a strange idea of "hi-fi" streaming on that site...

Sorry to bump this, but I thought I'd post a pic of the mystery stompbox in question. I've compred ti with all currently avaialbale models (at buzzfox.com) and with everything a google image search turned up on the term "electro harmonix" but I've got no match.

I'ts clealry larger than th Big Muff, has three knobs at the to, blue and red text or graphic in the middle of the pedal and some black text at the bottom...unless it's something the size and layout of the Memory man or Electric Mistress turned sideways...then my notions of 'top' and 'bottom' are askew...

Anyway, here's the pic:
