The best cheap gear you've had.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

ADA MP-1's were dog**** I used to talk guys out of them whenever I could back in the days of old, tick tick tick boom!

Best cheap pieces I own -

NEW - Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster

USED - Hamer MIK Studio Goldtop

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

The quality of "cheap" stuff is so good anymore that a better question might be "what cheap gear has let you down lately?"

My cheaper guitars and amps are miles ahead of similarly priced gear from the 90's.
I've said similar things over the last couple years, it's amazing how good most of the cheap stuff is right now.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Amen. Couldn't get rid of mine fast enough....replaced it with the Marshall 9001? Tube preamp which tonally was on a far superior planet, albeit a ***** to tweak.

Yeah, 128 (MIDI patches) ways to polish a turd... still sounds like a turd! haha

Although, I've kept mine (MP-1, B200S, foot controller and an Alesis Quadraverb) all these years and still have it and everything works.

It collects dust on my rack. Sentimental reasons I suppose.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Roland cube amp, a c note I walked ou of gc with it and 3 years anything take back warranty. Was great for 2 years, 364 days.haha

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Its a mexican low rider guitar did you wear a bandana way low over your eyes to play it lmao

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Ibanez GSZ120. I think they cost something like $230 new, I bought mine used on a much lower price, it was my first electric.

They are very nice guitars. 25.1" scale, basswood/mahogany body. Neck profile is great, pickups sound great (I´ve used the original neck pickup in three other guitars) . I played it until the neck turned unplayable due the fret wear. Only minus were the stock pots.

Because mine is now turned to some sort of Frankenstein, I´ve thought of trying to find one again. Very good guitars for the price.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

My dad's also got a Lag twelve string acoustic. Mahogany sides and back, not sure what the top is but it sounds fantastic. Very bright and is probably the loudest acoustic I've heard. If you have not heard of Lag you should check out their acoustics. It's a French company I believe.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

My $100 LP Studio. Thought it was an 82, but the CTS serial and the barely visible serial have it at 92. Regardless, plays great and can't beat that deal!

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

My Epi Dot Studio I got for a song on Craigs List. I love that guitar.

Mine was my honest-to-god #1 for a while. I replaced everything, but it had this chewiness and elasticity and liveliness I haven't felt or heard anywhere. It had terrible hardware at first, but with a new bridge, nut, switch, jack, pickups, etc. I turned a butterface into an objectively good guitar.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Any of the GFS replacement pickups I have purchased, sound great, and easy on the wallet...
Same here, their Mean 90 is still my favorite pickup of all time.

And I've had one of everything  --- Full Shred, Quarter Pounder, Dimebucker, P-Rails, Little '59, JB Jr., Hot Rails, Cool Rails, SSL-1s, Bill & Becky, Burstbucker Pros, all sorts of stuff.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

1) VOX AD15VT - my most gigged amp of all time. 1x8", 15W. It sounds SO GOOD I left the tube head and/or the tube combo + pedals at home. AD15VT + an SM57 and monitors = great tone, easy stage volume, happy crowd, happy soundguy, happy me. $189 new.

2) Epiphone Dot Studio - my favorite guitar. I replaced everything but the wood, but I knew when I first played it, it had magic in it. And it does, and it's even closer to the surface now with all the nice hardware I put on it. Sounds and feels chewy and has a weird depth and timbre that I haven't felt or heard anywhere else. $269 new, bought it while shopping for Les Pauls that were literally 10x that price.

3) Squier '51 - my baby, forever. This guitar was terrible when it was new. Bad fret ends, tall narrow frets, terrible electronics, just all around no-bueno. But, like Chris of Arabia said so eloquently earlier, it took well to surgery. And it's had all sorts of stuff done to it (once had P-Rails + Triple Shot + Splittable '59 for 14 unique options) and seems to sound good and feel good in any configuration. This is the guitar you take to the gig after staring at your 'spensive axes and deciding that this one is just plain more fun to play. $99 new.

4) Digitech Bad Monkey - believe the hype. I don't know if the hype is still going on - probably not since there's a million boutique and boucheap options out there today. This is a deliciously smooth tubescreamer with independent bass and treble controls that sounds like your amps sounds, so it's great if you have a good amp. $30 used.

5) SX Telecaster knockoff. I put a TUSQ nut on mine and it sounds awesome. It plays better-than-good. It sounds-better-than-good. It looks better-than-good. $119 new. The idea that a whole guitar, with a finish, and fretwork, and paint, and electronics, and made in another country and shipped to my stupid house, for $119, it just boggles my mind.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Top would be my Jet City JCA24 2x12 cab, then probably the Squire thinline Tele that I used to have that was a nice guitar, it just didn't fit my playing style at the time so I sold it... big mistake.

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

I paid around $100 for a white Epiphone Strat...had the Explorer style headstock. The Maple neck was very nice and the pickups sounded even better. I wish I had never sold that guitar

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Godin LG SP-90. Came stock with Duncan P-90's. Sounds and plays great. $175 used, but inexpensive to begin with.

Epiphone AJ-100 acoustic that was specially made for an employee who sold the most Epiphones, and Sam Ash accidentally sold it to me for $100. It sounds as good as a Gibson J-45.....I even A/B'd them.

OLP Ash 5 string bass. With Duncans and fret dress, it wasn't much different than a Musicman.

Fender Vaporizor 12W 2-10 combo......the best of the pawnshop series amps.

MXR Classic OD, Guitar Center special in green or cream. $29

Marshall Gov'nor II OD pedal. Sam Ash special $29. Sounds more like a Marshall than most boutique OD's claiming to have the Marshall sound.

Hamer EchoTone. Got it for cheap from GC's used gear. Wish I still had that one. What a score it was.

MXR Classic Overdrive

Re: The best cheap gear you've had.

Ibanez Tone Lok AP7 analog phaser, $15
Ibanez Echo Shifter, $99- cheap for a delay that is basically a carbon copy but with tap tempo and way more features.
ltd run 2003 MIM strat- got it used for like $250 I think, tone for days
Fender Supersonic 60 amp, used for $800 (great deal for an extremely high end fender tube amp that is a bassman, vibrolux, has springs, and has a KILLER gain section) around $1800 new back in the day. In 4 years I have never ever felt the need for any other amp. That's a reaaaally long time for tone freaks like us.

Also traded some crappy fender dreadnought for my Tacoma Chief, which is flippin sweet.

I have an Epiphone Masterbilt AJ that I kept over my Gibson AJ. For the money I think Epiphone makes some really great guitars.
