Okay guys, tell me what fuzz you use and why.

I am looking for a great fuzz tone that is very versitile and vintage sounding. So tell me which one is the best.

Most of the rest of my gear is listed below so you know what all i am using.

Thanks guys.

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

ive only tried a few...but im purchasing a Fulltone 70 pedal this week... ill report back to you

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

I have numerous fuzzes but always find them limited compared to overdrives...
They include a couple dunlop FF's, one of which is a Custom Shop, the rare Orange Sunshine pedal on my site, a Dunlop Jimi round version, a recent Voodoo Labs Superfuzz (noisy), and a newer Arbiter FF.
My favorite fuzztones were the early Yardbirds stuff with Jeff Beck, so I prefer the Vox Tonebenders and clones, like my Fulltone Soul-bender or Prescription Yardbox.
If I were going for a Jimi tone, I'd probably take Lew's word and get a Fulltone '69.

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

I think the MJM Foxey Fuzz is as good as it gets for a silicon-based pedal. It's a copy of the old triangle knob Muffs.

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

Yeah, for $150, the Fulltone 69 really delivers! Plus, it looks nice and classy....69. Ha
The pedal I'm jonesin for the most right now is the T. Rex Mudhoney. That thing is pure joy to play through! I'm about to jump on one at a local boutique store, The Amp Shop, Studio City, CA. I just noticed they had auctions for their T. Rex stuff on Ebay, now too. The Mudhoney is like a real corpulent, grindy fuzz that has blatty undertones that is like Sabbath had a baby with Hendrix. That's the only way I can describe that pedal. I want one.

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

well if the gearjoneser wants one they must be nice, but i have heard a lot of good things about the fulltone 69 also. Curly tell me more about the perscription yardbird and the soul bender, they sound like great pedals too.

Thanks Guys

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

well, here's Fulltone's page:
http://fulltone.com/SB.asp

his clip is probably pretty representative, but the Tonebender tone was the tone of the Yardbirds' "Heart Full of Soul", "Shapes of Things", and "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I"

I'd recommend it over the Yardbox, which is a little quirky electronically, IMO.

I find the Tonebender type pedals a little smoother and a little less "primitive" than Fuzz Faces, but they still have plenty of gain. :)

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

I don't have a fuzz. But if I got one it'd be that Zvex Fuzz Factory. That thing be dead sexy!

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

Hello Curly--
I build a bunch of fuzzes [Tonebenders, FF, Axis, etc...] And did you know that the early Jeff Beck fuzz was the Vox Tonebender [ two-transistor pre- Fuzz Face model] ?? The only way to nail the early Beck tone is with that circuit! The later three-transistor Tonebenders [like Page used in the Yardbirds and early Gimp Blimp] is much fatter and can pump out more gain, but it doesn't have the "snarl" of the Vox unit.
Brian.

brian,
thanks, I admit to a little confusion over the various mk1, mk2, Vox, and Colorsound circuits. I guess I should've looked to see what jeff was using back when I saw him with the Yardbirds in '65. :)

My partner in high school had the Vox unit with the grey crinkle paint, and those were fat and gainy but still smooth enough ... I assumed that was a 3 tranny circuit - in any case it sounded better than the Jordan Bosstone I was using at the time
The Soul-Bender is close, especially for as seldom as I use it. I have an older model, and it may be that the newer ones with a trim pot are even better.

I've read that the Yardbox probably copied the wrong circuit, but the real problem I have with that unit is a weird doubling of notes, kinda like a ghost note created by an amp. Other that that, it is fairly similar in tone.

Fuzz Faces are OK, but I felt ToneBenders got the edge as far as harmonics.

thanks again,
Gary

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

(Not to steal the thread, but...)

What about for a Jimmy Page live style fuzz?

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

the voodoo labs super fuzz is the only fuzz i have and i really like it. sounds great into my marshall. mine isnt noisy like curlys, not sure why. i got mine used so im not sure how old it is.
i took me a little while to figure out what settings work best with my amp, the resonance and attack controls were new to me.

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

thanks, jeremy
I played the Superfuzz a couple times and the noise turned me off, but I'll give it another shot - maybe it was bad grounding on the guitar???

I liked their Micro Vibe so much that I ordered the Superfuzz. .... both pedals I learned about on the forum. :)

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

IF you want the best, the best fuzz face styled after hendrix's later tones (i.e. fulltone '70) your better of with a vintage tone project classic 60's fuzz. Im probably gonna get one alogn with a roadrunner supersonic fuz (modeled after a vox tonebender)
