the best fuzz pedals?

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

Heres a link to a post I made yesterday about the Axis fuzz (probably more than anyone would want to know about my thoughts on that pedal in fact lol)

https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=123577

Also in regards to whomever it was that mentioned having poor soundclips on the webpage, all I can say is that if your RM and you've got one of the greatest guitarist to ever live associated with your effects such as the Octavia and Fuzz you really don't need to worry too much about other clips lol.

Go listen to BOG, Live at Berkley, Axis: Bold as Love or any other late era Jimi and thats the sound of RM.

I mean I own a good number of fuzz boxes and I'm sure I've heard that each and every one of them can get the "Hendrix" sound but while each is good in its own way, nothing I've played really nailed it like the Axis.

The Axis just has got the dynamics and feel that the other boxes don't have in the way it responds to your picking and volume knob. Its really the key to the Hendrix tone

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

The Axis is one bad fuzz!
Love it!

Definatly, when you push the drive knob from 9 to 10 it goes into a really aggressive spitting and generally pissed off sounding fuzz though back it off a little and its got a very nice fuzz/od effect with great clarity and an amazing ability to back off the guitars volume and clean it up. Weird but it cleans up better than most germainium fuzz boxes I've played even and its silicon.

Never gets too woofy or farty sounding on the lows either which I really like. I can actually use it with the bass up on my amp and not cross into the sludge rock muff tones at high gain.

I'm amazing thinking of selling my Keeley Fuzz Head since getting the Axis since its got such a nice low gain fuzz/od tone backed off. Totally didnt' expect it would work so good for that

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

I think the only pedal I have that actually qualifies as a fuzz is my Big Muff

I'd show a picture of my old Big Muff, but Comcast has hosed my images, and I'd have to find the pic and upload it as an attachment. Just about everything I've bought since has been more of a distortion, or OD pedals.

I guess I have a Dunlop Fuzzface too. But Dunlop did a pretty dismal job with their version.

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

I've got an Analogman NKT275 Sunface that does a very creamy kind of fuzz, very responsive to the guitar's volume control, and eliminating a lot of the fickleness of germanium with the sundial control. It seems to run a fine balance between nastiness and that flutey fuzzface quality, in a well built and reliable pedal.

Cheers...............................wahwah

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

I'm very happy with the Barber Trifecta. It does the big muff , triangle muff and more. The tone control is actually useable (unlike the muff - sorry). It can have much more presence and is quite musical.

I also have a BYOC Ultimate Fuzz; but it isn't soldered up yet - next weekend!

I haven't played one; but the clips I heard of the Mad Professor Fire Red Fuzz sound really good! http://www.thesegoto11.se/

My fave so far has been the Fulltone Ultimate Octave in Fuzz mode. Killer tones that thing can get. Mmmm Mmmm!!! I miss mine.

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

Boss FZ-2 - extreme fuzz on both modes; even diads are out of control
EHx Big Muff Pi - Awesome fuzziness, but the bass response is a little floppy
RAT (Keeley-modified) - rock distortion with prominent overtones; sounds like fuzz, but full-voiced chords sound out

Re: the best fuzz pedals?

I recently bought a reissue Fuzz Face and I like it a heck of a lot. The NYC Big Muff was just too high-gain (I like vintage sounds) and saturated for me any more. I think a surprising number of people don't understand that a Fuzz Face needs to be pushed by a good overdriven tube signal or at least blended with the amp's distortion. I saw reviews on Harmony Central, and this is an exaggeration, but people who hooked it up to their 5w clean channel and had their guitar's volume rolled down to 3 were furious that it didn't instantly make them sound like Jimi. I'm currently looking into Fuzz Face mods to make it even better.

I really liked the Fulltone Octafuzz. You can use it without the octave up option. It's fat and pretty sweet. The Fulltone sound samples don't do it no justice though.

I use a Big Muff Pi. I think it's a little guitar sensitive, don't know why but I love the way it sounds with Strats and hate the way it sounds with Gibsons.
