The best guitar instruction video/book!

Which guitar instruction video and book did you learn the most from? Which did not just include licks and a guitarplayer who was showing off?

Written by a jazzer who shreds. The book probably has less than 20 pages of commentary, followed by a few hundred pages of picking and fingering drills. Written in tab and standard notation.

Personally, I'm really looking forward for the next book in the series.

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

i learned a lot from this brian setzer tab book i got

I wasn't used to playing rockabilly & it kept me on my toes & playing fast, which is good

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

Both Scott Henderson vids: Jazz Improv and Melodic Phrasing.

I also learned a lot from an Eric Clapton concert (2001). Stole a looooottt.... of licks from him...

I just got a "Jazz Play Along" book of backing tracks. It has all lead tabbed out, so you can analyse what scales are used. It's great. It has footprints, all blues, bluesette, stella by starlight, tenor madness, how insensitive!, and a coupla more. Foot prints is my favorite by Wayne Shorter - its a latin sounding waltz

Footprints is a great tune! -I have a tune I'm working up that is sort of 'footprints meets EJ's east wes'. What's the title of the book you got? -sounds like just the thing for me: interested in jazz but no time for lessons.

Anyway, to answer the thread:

The best video I've come across is Keith Wyatt's 'rockin the blues'. It's designed for beginner/intermediate rock players who want to get some authentic blues fee to their playing. Really well taught stuff that everyone should get down. Blues is hard to teach, but Wyatt does a great job.

Paul Gilbert's first video got my alternate picking down. At one point in my late teens I had most of those licks up to his speed, which I find a bit mind-boggling today.

Don Mock's video taught me a huge amount about how to play over dominant chords. His chord scale built off the mixolydian mode is the most consistently useful thing I've learned for real world application.

Robben Ford's videos are great, too.

It's interesting that all the above guys have taught at MI in Hollywood. That teaching experience is a huge part of why their videos are more useful than some of the 'star player' ones out there.

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

I really like Danny Gatton's video: Strictly Rythym I think it is called. I learned a ton off of that.

I also like Robben Ford's instruction videos, especially the Blues and Beyond where he walks you through Duke Ellington's Ain't Got Nothin But the Blues.

These are not beginner videos...you should already know how to play before tackling these.

**WANK ALERT!!** :D :D

My favourite instruction videos are:

VINNIE MOORE: SPEED AND ACCURACY ... a LOT of great information and alternate picking exercises from one of the nicest shredders around. There is also an amazing section on playing modes.

PAUL GILBERT: INTENSE ROCK ... some truly terrifying displays of madness, but PG breaks it down so well, and the exercises and 'tricks' get progressively more difficult. I find it really helpful in honing in on the weak spots in my picking technuque.

MIKE CAMPESE: VIRTUOSO ROCK FUSION ... advanced exercises for those of you that really want to play like Jason Becker or John Petrucci. Since Mike played on the Becker tribute CD, you know he can deliver the goods. This video is vast and has a ton of useful information. Mike's a great guy + guitarist ... ** NOT FOR BEGINNERS **

RICHIE KOTZEN: ROCK CHOPS ... If this video doesn't get your chops in shape, nothing will!!

:D

Paul Gilbert Intense Rock
Paul Gilbert Intense Rock II
Paul Gilbert Terrfying Guitar Trip
Yngwie REH video

Paul Gilbert is the man.
All of his videos are not a bunch of jacking off so, you really learn things.
Maybe it's because he was a teacher at GIT.

And believe it or not, I actually learned from Yngwie's REH video!

Keith Wyatt's "Blues guitar Step Two" was my first learning
video. It's fun to follow; but I would prefer having a DVDversion of it instead; so I would be able to slow down the speed of certain demonstrations. I have not been
able to learn well the vibrato technique from his video. I'm looking for a good video that wood give progressive exercices to master vibrato well, not just show you how he does it and then tell you "practice A LOT".

:saeek:
I'm open to your suggestions guys !

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

The only instructional DVD I have is John Pettrucci's "Rock Disipline." Those exercises have really helped me to loosen up quite a bit. But I do have a lot of jam-along CD's and various play-along CD's. A lot of good stuff to learn from out there.

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

Hmmm...

I learned quite a bit from Original Gary Moore by Wolf Marshall (book & tape).

For vids, I had a Hot Licks video with Vivian Campbell that was pretty good.

I used to have a ton of those vids..malmsteen, johnson, gilbert, etc. etc..but watched them more for entertainment and ideas, than actually learning what was on them.

I learned the most from jamming along with Strangers in the Night, Live & Dangerous, Live after Death, and Frampton Comes Alive.

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

I don't own any but I've borrewed a few from my guitar teacher...

I had a "some-guy" plays Vai licks, that was alright, but it didn't inspire me to play.

An Eric Johnson vid which was very good, the hybrid picking really made me look into that as a style (I used it already but not as extensively), and his accuracy made me work on my own :D I tried my best to get quite a few of the examples down but I can't remember them now :( Was at least a year ago...

An Allan Holdworth vid, that I ended up watching with my guitar on my lap :saeek:

And a Bill "the buddha" D!ckens vid, which I ended up watching with my bass on my lap :yell:

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

If your just looking for general knowledge and not a style type instructional video - the Fretboard Logic books and DVDs are really helpful and cover a lot of ground.

Re: The best guitar instruction video/book!

I have yet to purchase any instructional books by Artists or for a particular Artist's style. I do own several books with sheet music from Artists.

The best instructional book I own is A modern Method For Guitar (Volumes 1,2, & 3) by William Leavitt. It is a sightreading book that I refer to still today!!!

Total Rock Guitar by Troy Stetina is excellent for beginner to intermediate. It is a collection of original songs that combine rythm and lead styles so you can learn both together. Starts out with a simple song in the Smoke on the Water vein and gets progressively more difficult.

The included cd rom plays normal and slow and also includes the full track in stereo so you can tune out the guitar and play along with the band.

You can check it out at www.stetina.com
