The best guitar you never loved....

Is there a guitar in your past or present that you should absolutely love...but don't? Did you ever scrimp and save for that one elusive guitar...then finally get it in your grubby little hands only to not like it? I have and stupid me, I did it twice!! Back in the 80's after Guild made the first Brian May guitar. I actually put an ad in "Guitar Player" magazine to see if I could find one. Well, I did, I paid $500 plus shipping for it. Opened it up and never ever liked playing it. Those squeaky little tones and flat as a pancake fretboard...I just could never come to terms with it. I tried and I tried and I tried.....lucky for me someone called me and ask if I had found any (as in more than one) they were looking for one. I sold him mine for $500 plus shipping and was quite happy.
Did I learn my lesson?...Hell no! I bought one of the Burns BM models and hated it even more. I traded it off for something and I won't do that again.
I just wondered if I'm the only doofus that has done that or if some of my fellow forumites have enjoyed the same success.

PRS guitars. I have owned two of them and never came to grips with either. A number of friends of mine have bought them too and sold them within a year or so. They are extremely well made but seem to have a lot of short term ownership history.

Yes........I searched for years and years (before the interweb) to find a Gibson EDS1275.....I found one and bought it but sold it several months later. Too neck heavy (just plain heavy!) and a real pain in the butt to keep tuned. It's the least practical guitar for my needs I could buy..........That was in about 1994............I bought another one last fall, dunno why! I got a good deal and a stand to make a few bucks, if the guitar market bounces back. My bandmates and my wife think it's the coolest guitar I own. I however feel pretty much the same as I did with the first one I had..............you're not the only doofus!

Mine was a Gibson Sg2, it had the low impedance pickups and had a interesting cover for the bridge with Gibson written on it. Of course I sold it for some stupid reason for next to nothing. I wish I could meet up with it again.

I sold a epiphone custom shop wildkat in special edition tiger burst. I just didn't connect with it. I got good cash for it though, and it's either going to fund my next les paul or maybe a epiphone dot of some sort.

I do agree on the PRS stuff, amazing craftsmanship for sure but I just don't dig them.

Theres nothing physically wrong with them but they just don't feel right to me.

Maybe seeing Chad Kroger from Nickleback had something to do with it ? lol

You sold that!? Wow. I mean as a guitar it wasn't really my favorite, but as investments go it seemed good. But then again, you say you got good money so that's good.

Man I wish I could of kept that guitar and played it for 20 years. It fought me everytime I played it though, and it grew to a place where we hated each other. I got prime cash for it though, like I said, it will fund most of my next les paul probably.

Actually I saw a used duo jet at a shop that was in my budget...

ES-335 and most hollow or semi hollow body guitars I've tried.

Played in a jazz group for two years, I am a fan of Scofield, BB King and Larry Carlton... almost every ES type guitar I see gives me GAS - but when I play them... nothing feels right. Nothing. Tried cheap and expensive Ibanez versions, Gibsons, a few Epiphones and figured out that they are all not my cup of tea.

i spent over 2 years working part time jobs in highschool to save for a Marshall and a Kramer... in the end i smashed the Kramer and sold the Marshall.... The Marshall was SS and the Kramer was Plywood....

My LP i saved and borrowed for it but never could play it as the neck was too thick... MY boss at the time loaned me $400 to get it and then took my pay check away the next month almost... i was young... it almost wrecked my wrist... it still sits in my closet... I only bought it because it was the guitar i dreamed of owning and it was the Deluxe model Pete Townshend used in my favourite period of The Who...

my first guitar was an Ibanez Rx-160, total shredder guitar, but with out the floyd bridge. anyways, i worked like a dog for 6 months doing odd jobs to buy it. i finally bought it and did not like it at all. plus after about 2 months everything on it started to die, and buzz...

My PRS CU22 was an outstanding guitar, but I don't regret moving it on. No magic.

My Les Paul jr was a killer sounding guitar, but I couldn't work with the almost shredder 60s neck profile. It now lives with a friend who loves it to death, so happy ending there.

Phil, Duo Jets aren't for everyone. They aren't for people who don't want the best possible combination of playability, looks, sound, and downright sexiness. Scott (Wattage) might have one for sale, and his is cheap. Talk to him.

But if you don't want a guitar that sounds awesome, plays awesome, and is one of the 5 prettiest guitar designs ever, then don't PM him.

I like attention though, and I like to sound/play awesome. If you want to own one of the sexiest guitars ever made, buy one:

I never bought this guitar, but I always wanted a Gibson LP, local music store had one used at a very good price. I went it played it for about 45 minutes and never liked it. I loved the tones, but I could not get over how heavy it was, or how uncomfortable the neck was. I felt the same way about the SG. I guess I need to stick with Washburn.

True but to me a Gretsch just is supposed to be way more hollow than a Duo Jet. Sure the tone chambers are fine for small time smuggling, but if you really want to move some "product" you really need a nice hollow 17" body LOL

Any of the expensive guitars Ive had that when you let go of the neck, they took a dive and the body swung up where the butt of the guitar was up in the air and the headstock was pointing straight into the ground. U.S.A. Hamer Exploerer and 60's P90 Gibson SG. Got rid of both. Loved the sound, the look, the feel, but hated the neck heavey.

It sounds like you know your stuff and have played a Jet, but I think you're slightly underestimating the airyness. There's more wood missing from a Duo Jet than just about anything. If you added F-Holes, it'd be a hollowbody.

The lack of F-Holes just makes the guitar that much tighter. I love a great hollowbody too (and own one obviously), but the Jet is everything that's awesome about a 6120, and everything that's great about a Les Paul. In short, an awesome guitar!
