The best guitar you never loved....

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

If you want to own one of the sexiest guitars ever made, buy one:
Give me a couple of grand and sure I'll own one but Gretschs aren't in the price range of alot of people! Although I so wish I had a duo jet!

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

That's the thing man, you can buy 'em used (depending on condition) anywhere from $700-$1500, all day long.

Fender bought Gretsch in 2003, and they overhauled everything. As a result, the pre Fender ones are less desirable in general, and fetch up to $1100 or so. The post Fender models get anywhere up to about $1700. Mine was particularly rare (post Fender, but with pre Fender appointments) and it only cost me $1000. But my point is that they're not expensive (for what you're getting) as long as you keep your eyes open.

If I wasn't buying one of my dream cars this week, there's a dude selling a 1955 Duo jet for only $2500. It's worth a lot more than that. Such a great investment! I'm kinda bummed, but if I get the car it'll be worth it.

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. I sold it and bought a Kramer Pacer (1985?).

At the time, it was a Les Paul, and many classic players played them, so it should be good, right? And when I look back, I think "I sold a Les Paul to buy a Kramer?" But the truth is that the Kramer was a far better guitar than the LP.

The Lp had some severe finish proplems, but I didn't care about that at the time. It had the metal covered humbuckers -- just like the PAFs that EVH had used. Well, no, they were minihumbuckers. I thought something looked out of proportion when I bought it but something didn't quite click. It wasn't until later that I realized that it had mini humbukcers and that is why it sounded so thin.

But it's an LP, so it should play great, right? Well, I was read Guitar Player (or a similar mag) on how to set up your guitar. I popped off the truss rod cover only to find that the truss rod bolt was broken off. OK, so that was why it played like crap, and the minihumbuckers made it sound like crap.

The Kramer was a huge upgrade. But still, to this day, despite what I know about my old LP Deluxe, I still wish I had it. At least for a day. I'm sure after a day of fiddling with it, it would confirm that I made the right choice back in 1985 when I was 15. But, there is still that lingering doubt.

Jackson USA RR-1 in snow white w/black bevels. Great playing and feeling guitar other than the trem and the fact that it sounded like crap.

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

ESP custom shop Kamikazee. It was the bright green camo. It had the reverse hockey stick (not the ugly buzz saw stock), an ebony board and it was actually an M-II body I think (it wasn't quite as thick as a normal Kami).

It was a totally absurd yet cool (IMO) looking guitar but I never gelled with it. I think it was a combination of the fact that it wasn't set up that great (and I had no idea how to tackle a floyd rose), I didn't like the pickups (this was before I started swapping them) and it was 25.5" scale length, which I've never gotten along with. That and the neck was a bit thinner than I prefer.

I wish I got along with it, but I just couldn't bring myself to justify keeping it. Too bad, it would have made a great stage guitar. Especially for the type of music I play (not 80's at all). Wish I had pics of it, but now that I think about it, that must have been about four years ago. ****, time flies.

Les Pauls! As much as I want to, I just can't get on with them...

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

i dunno what it is but i just can't play a Paul Reed Smith. I think it's the scale length...I dig my Strat's scale cuz i've had one for so long, I dig my SG's scale cuz it feels so much smoother and easier but a PRS just feels.............wrong. Add to that the gaudy looks and the "handle with care" aspect of any guitar with a flame maple top and you've got a guitar that does not suit my style whatsoever.

It's funny cuz the guitarist i've been jamming with has nothing but bad things to play about SG's...so we both play eachother's least favorite guitar. hahaha

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

2 guitars, an American PV Wolfgang and an American Jackson JJ. They were super nice guitars and very well made but, I never fully bonded with them.

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

My MIA Fender Strat with stock pickups. I guess I'm really a humbucker guy - my other MIA has a couple of Hotrails to get me through. But the past few weeks I've been playing the strat and I just bought a Texas Special for the neck. I think I may be coming around.

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

Due to historical reasons I have a special affinity to early 1980ties Ibanez. They sold me a 83 Blazer that is just magic and for a long time I was looking for more of the same.

I more or less blind bought an Ibanez Musician 400 something, a neck-through made only from the finest materials. Also lots of switches which I like.

Not mine, random picture found on Internet. Mine had the non-standard plastic cover pickups.

To make a long story short, I kept it for about 7 years always picking it up once a month and not ever touching it for real playing. The sound is just too sterile and I didn't like it playing-wise either.

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

I'd have to say it's the Gibsons I've purchased sight unseen. I had purchased 2 custom shop LP Special DCs, a custom shop SG Custom and a Les Paul Standard and all 4 left something to be desired. Ironically, the 2 standard production Gibsons I had purchased in Guitar Center: my Firebird V and the '76 RI Explorer, are/were great guitars.

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

For me a Les Paul. I love the way they sound, but I don't like the way they play. I also don't like wearing one around my neck for 2 to 3 hours. That being said I own 2..... a Standard and a Studio, but nowadays I generally play my Guild Bluesbird. I like it better right now!

you are not alone... back in the mid 80's all of my group of friends were getting Kramers... i saw some friends sell some nice LP's for like $500... one guy i went to high school with was a huge Jimmy Page fan and he had a nice mint mid 70's LP Standard in cherry burst... he ended up trading it for a 1987 Kramer Focus... within 2 months he wanted his LP Back...

i saw lots of that going on

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

i'd probably have to say a guitar that was made for me. looks amazing, plays well... but lost the love for it lately. contemplated selling it... but its not top on my priority list to sell just yet

Re: The best guitar you never loved....

I owned a 70's Gretsch Electromatic I beleive was the name. I tried to love it, but for some reason could not. I traded it for a Cherry SG. I kick myself now for doing it though.:(
