I think this is the best mods that u can do on a JB.. well atleast i LIKE it a lot..
ol' JB with Alnico2 and hex polepiece on the bass side.. and plug in straight to Marshall JCM900..
before this i was using Gibson 300K vol pot.. but it get even better with CTS 500K (480K)

IMO, my favorite one is to cut the pole pieces nearly flush with the body and wire it in conjunction with a no load tone pot. I want to try a roughcast in there, too...

Re: the best JB mods ever.. :)

I haven't personally tried this with the JB, but given the similarities between the JB and Dist winds, I can say that the Dist with an A2 is super good. I've heard other reports that the JB with an A2 is terrific.

The roughcast A5 is great in the JB.

It balances out the sharp unpleasant treble, and reins in the bloated bass response of the polished A5. Adds a bit more texture and character to the pickup as well, and IMO, makes it a lot more usable/versatile.

Nice mod!

I really like the stock JB... I feel so uncivilized.

Same feelings here man :D The JB is one of the things that I would never think to be changed but this thread shows how the very same thing can get totally different thoughts and reactions.

i dont know guys.. i'v tried so many pickups before, just fell in love with this setup.. some pickup do sound great with specific kind of wood..
and its amazed me A2 didnt cut the power too much.. JB still screams...

Depends on the guitar and genres you're playing. There are places stock JB's excel at, but like anything else, they aren't going to make every player happy in every guitar. There's been many posts here over the years about guys modding their JB's with different magnets, in an attempt to tame the high-end, add midrange, or tighten up the low-end. The stock JB is well-known around here to be a squirrely PU in some guitars.

Aka, a JB from the 80s

Re: the best JB mods ever.. :)

I had a JBJ from 1989 that sounded great. It was the narrow/standard pole spacing. I was never quite sure if it sounded smoother because of the narrower bobbins or what. Guess it was the RCA5 that made the difference.

When did they stop using rough cast A5?

Also, my other JB is a TB4L from around 2002. Would that be the same components/materials as the current production version?

Re: the best JB mods ever.. :)

And as always - I am NOT a fan of the JB. At least in a Les Paul style. Ice picky and shrill to me. And I like Ceramic Screamers. And obviously I modded mine with an A8, which I love.

That said - my most tonally complimented gig EVER; Stock JB in an All Mahogany Dean Cadillac!

Think about it.

Ace,

Wasn't that when you played for the old folks retirement community and they had to check their hearing aids at the door?:biglaugh::haha:
