The BEST Marshall EVAR!!!!!!

Re: The BEST Marshall EVAR!!!!!!

6100LM. Only one I've ever really liked.

Re: The BEST Marshall EVAR!!!!!!

1987 Silver Jubilee. If we're talking stock Marshall's....this is the one. Good cleans, great drive. A few tweaks will get you to Plexi range, bluesbreaker range, 2204 range and beyond.

I love these amps! Of course, you'll never find one of the high polished brass, limited editions.....the collectors snapped those up quick!

I had an amazing Marshall in the mid nineties. I bought a modded 71 Superbass from an ex-famous player who was tweaked out.....he sold me this head for $550 for crack. It was a heavily modded point to point Marshall that had 1 stock channel, and the other hooked up to a highgain mod. I took it to the tech, who's name was signed inside, and he couldn't believe I bought it from the guy for $550, because he told me it may have been one that Bob Rock used on some Metallica and Cult CD's. He'd worked on that amp for Bob Rock, when he owned it, so the thing definitely had a pedigree! Without a doubt, it was the most fat and mindblowing "real" Marshall I've ever heard, but I decided to let it go a few years ago, and sold it to Japanese collector for $1800. I kinda wish I'd never sold that one, but it was hella loud, and I needed to raise money for another amp.

Re: The BEST Marshall EVAR!!!!!!

1987 to 1989 JCM800 2210....... and this is really narrowing it down. I absolutley love Super Leads, but even I rarely get to be that loud when gigging... I do have a very pristine 2203, of which I'm also rather fond of, but even it's limiting..... so I'm only left with my very beloved 2210... guaranteed to be the most "heard" Marshall ever made given the context of it's timeline... but by far the most "overlooked" and best kept secret when it comes to amps.

...of course, that's just my opinion...

Considering your good reputation around here, I think your opinion can be trusted. :D I may have to do a little research on those myself.

Approximately what settings would you use for each of those ranges? I've got my eye on a 2554 combo, and I'd like to know how to get the best out of it.

Re: The BEST Marshall EVAR!!!!!!

The best Marshalls were not "Marshalls" but Park amps.

You mean the ones that had the exact same circuits as the Marshalls? :D

Re: The BEST Marshall EVAR!!!!!!

The best Marshall amp I've ever owned is my '70 model 1987 50 watt head with EL-34's.

I like it better than the late 60's 50 watters and 100 watters I've owned. And I like it better than the JCM-800 50 watters I've owned and which I compared it too.

My '70 50 watt head is the best Marshall I've evr owned and one of the best amps I've ever owned.

But that said, it's still to darned loud!

Lew...would you say that is because it's a bit more agressive than the late 60s amps?

Thats the reason I prefer the 72+ circuit. A little brighter and more agressive than the late 60's stuff. Your 70 I think would be a good "middle ground" comparitively for those who don't want a "metal" amp, but want more edge than a "classic plexi"

Re: The BEST Marshall EVAR!!!!!!

If I ever decide to cash out of my Jubilee fullstack, it'll be a sad day for me. It's the 50W 2550 fullsize stack. I put in JJ E-34L's and Sovtek 12AX7LPS pre tubes, and I swear it sounds better than it would have in 1987. Also, both cabs have a mix of G75's and Vintage 30's, so there's a fuller frequency response. I think the best highgain Marshalls were the 25th Ann. Jubilees and the 30th Ann. Blue 6100's (the ones with EL-34's). For a singing lead tone right outta the box, those get my vote.

As far as vintage Marshalls, I think my favorites would be early 70's metel front 50 watters, like the same ones Yngwie has always used. 100W sound fuller and bigger, but I'd rather have a 50W w/E-34L's cranked up to 6 or 7, than a 100W on 2 or 3.
I've always thought that 100 watter should have regular EL-34's, and 50W should have E-34L's.....it makes them sound about as fat as a 100W amp.

Good to see the love around here for the 1987 :D I got into them of course cos of Schenker, the Scorpions, etc...Then found out about Yngwie using them too. So when it was time to dump the Laney & the Jackson head, thats the way I went.

Good tip about the 34L's, Joe.

To me, my '70 seems to have more presence, clarity and a tighter bass response than the late 60's plexi 50 watt I owned...but it overdrives beautifully when pushed. I guess that might qualify as more agressive.

I've only owned one 50 watt plexi and it wasn't as lively sounding as my '70. I bought my plexi from Scott Morgan who used to have a band called the Rationals back in the 60's.

My '70 is a handwired amp. I think the '74's which alot of players like for thier agressive quality are actually early printed circuit board Marshalls...mine was. I like my '70 more than '74 I had...the '74 was more shrill and rougher sounding.

Marshall changed the power tranny specs all through the late 60's and 70's and each time they'd change the way the voltage was distributed to each part of the amp the tone would change that year!

Thanks Lew for the insight. :)

Yes...def tighter than a 60s amp..that was kinda rolled into the "agressive" comment :) Although my X is a PCB, it was designed around a primo 72 circuit Marshall had at the factory. For a reissue amp w/ a so-so transformer and not the real thing it really is a great sound.

The variance is amazing. even between same model years. A friend of mine from many years ago had a couple of identical Super Bass heads and the difference in tone beween the two was marked. And yes, they all are too damn loud! :gurmpy: :D

You have a 1992 SL-X? What's the serial number? I've seen some conflicting reports as to when they started making them. Some say 1992, some say 1993. Knowing if yours is in fact a 1992 will solidify it. Same with the MkIII's. I've seen some guy saying they made them until 1993 but that can't be right.
