Re: The best pickup?
Most Balanced, all around good sounding? 59/Custom w/ A8 in a les paul
Favorite? Neck: PGn w/ A3 in les paul studio, Bridge: 59/Custom with just about any magnet, Fat w/ A2, balanced and thick w/ A8 (but didn't balance as well with the neck), Defined w/ A5, but not as sweet on the high notes, Hard with a capital "H" with A4. Personally, I don't like A4, if you can't tell. But all the other magnets sound good, I just ended up going with A2 because of how badass it sounds distorted. Just imagine Rock n' Roll with the attitude knob pegged. Seriously, I could rock out with just that pickup on for hours.
In a strat: I really like the surfers I just got, haven't been able to compare them to anything except the stock fender singles and the Eric Clapton noiseless single coils in my friend's strat. FWIW, the Eric Clapton singles are painfully bright and to my ears don't sound good at all. But they are noiseless. And the strat singles actually sounded pretty good, if you could finesse them right (i.e. had the right touch), they can sound great. Great dynamics, very balanced, wound pretty hot with ceramic pole pieces, but still sound good to my ears.
