The best pickup?

I've been stewing this up for days now. I know it depends on the type of body, neck, etc... I was just wondering what is the best pickup you guys have ever used? I'm going for all around tone here.

Re: The best pickup?

IMO the SH-5 Custom was the best pup I've ever tried.

Unfortunately, I accidentally broke it.
And none of my guitars have them.

Re: The best pickup?

As far as a humbucker, Custom/59 hybrid with an A5 magnet.

For singlecoils I would have to go with my Zhangwound A5 Strat singles.

Re: The best pickup?

My favorite do it all pup is a C5. I suspect some version of the Custom wind is going to be pretty popular for this (or the JB of course)

Re: The best pickup?

Most Balanced, all around good sounding? 59/Custom w/ A8 in a les paul
Favorite? Neck: PGn w/ A3 in les paul studio, Bridge: 59/Custom with just about any magnet, Fat w/ A2, balanced and thick w/ A8 (but didn't balance as well with the neck), Defined w/ A5, but not as sweet on the high notes, Hard with a capital "H" with A4. Personally, I don't like A4, if you can't tell. But all the other magnets sound good, I just ended up going with A2 because of how badass it sounds distorted. Just imagine Rock n' Roll with the attitude knob pegged. Seriously, I could rock out with just that pickup on for hours.

In a strat: I really like the surfers I just got, haven't been able to compare them to anything except the stock fender singles and the Eric Clapton noiseless single coils in my friend's strat. FWIW, the Eric Clapton singles are painfully bright and to my ears don't sound good at all. But they are noiseless. And the strat singles actually sounded pretty good, if you could finesse them right (i.e. had the right touch), they can sound great. Great dynamics, very balanced, wound pretty hot with ceramic pole pieces, but still sound good to my ears.

Re: The best pickup?

I liked the unpotted Duncan '59s quite a bit. They cut very well, have a lot of body to their sound, and they're very alive. I ordered a second set, but havn't decided what to use them in yet.

My WCR Crossroads set is very good.

The neck pickup from my '82 Les Paul Standard sounded amazing as a neck pickup in a Tele.

And the DiMarzio PAFs they came in my '79 Hamer Sunburst are a great set. In that guitar, they're magic. Those were esentially OEM, and while the DiMarzio PAFs I bought more recently were good, it wasn't really the same.

I don't think there's such a thing as a best pickup. Your playing style, and how you adjust the pickups is almost as big a factory as the guitar you put the pickups in. If everyone figured out how to adjust their own pickups, it'd probably be really bad for the pickup business.

Re: The best pickup?

Based on which pickup I have in most of my guitars I will have to say the Custom Custom as well.

Bungalowbill... I remember making you one a while back...

As much as i like the 78 Model/EVH and especially the Brobucker... the 59/Custom Hybrid always takes the cake as the best overall...

I think that is what you are inquiring about... the BEST overall...

The Custom Custom and Custom 5 are pretty cool if you want to stay stock/production humbucker...

59/Jazz Hybrid is THE neck humbucker!

I like the Twangbanger & APS-1's in a Strat

Jerry Donahue and APTR-1 in a Tele

The Phat Cats are great in EVERYTHING!

Re: The best pickup?

What is the best magnet to go with in the 59/Custom Hybrid? I just picked up a used Custom, and I have a 78 now. I am itching to try out some hybrids.

Re: The best pickup?

I personally have had success with Duncan Distortion's in Les Paul types and JB's in Strat types.............never tried anything in the custom family, I need to, and will, but why mess with success?

Re: The best pickup?

my favorite for bridge is the distortion while for the neck its the jazz. i'd like to try the custom you guys recommended to me a long LONG time ago. and 'd also like another one for the neck......
first i'll go for the custom. what do you like about the custom \m/(00)\m/

Re: The best pickup?

I'm suprised to hear that you guys like the custom custom so much, I figured it wasn't that popular due to the 'loose' bass people say it has.
