The Cure's Robert Smith's incredibly elaborate and custom guitar rig.

Re: The Cure's Robert Smith's incredibly elaborate and custom guitar rig.

I like very much the Cure albums : Pornography, Faith and 17 seconds and also the 1st one (two versions).

In the old days he used a Bass VI ?

He actually got this looks after performing with Siouxsie.

Yes, Bass VI, now he plays signature model versions from other mfgs. I think he's on his 2 or 3 company.

yep, the look came from being a Banshee, but ironically, he actually got more often happier sounding after the stint with the Banshees (post 1984) -which was some of the creative friction in the Cure that caused a lineup change.

Re: The Cure's Robert Smith's incredibly elaborate and custom guitar rig.

i know reeves plays the bass vi sometimes with the cure as well. he has a house locally and hangs out at a local shop. my blackstar mosfet od was his actually. his thing one and two are class a amps that run three kt88s in parallel, he says they are loud as hell. but more importantly goth chicks dont care about rigs. they want to mope and be hot and not be noticed (but actually want to be noticed, just not acknowledged unless its obliquely) and have awkward conversations about obscure theoretical bs :D

Re: The Cure's Robert Smith's incredibly elaborate and custom guitar rig.

I appreciate you spinning a positive :lmao:

I think I listened to more Cure around the time than certain fans. You know how it goes, after some milk shake with smart goth gals:

"Let's talk" (cigarette) "Do you like arguments?"
"What? No. I am a simple guy. I like guitars and simple situations."
"I love to argue. Attack, defend... Wonderful game."
"Aaaa-ham."
"Let's argue about something! What do you love?"
"You, for instance."
"Why?"
"Why not?"
"That is not an argument"
"To an extent, yes."
"No"
"Yes"
"No"
"Y... awww hell. Let's listen to Cure, okay?"
"Oooh I love Cure."

In 3 minutes: milk shake, next round.

Damn. I miss the '90s.

Re: The Cure's Robert Smith's incredibly elaborate and custom guitar rig.

I'm braggin (again) I lived in Cleve when the Cure was doing a record label showcase tour of clubs prior to the release of their first US chart boom. So I was standing about 2 feet away from them and he was using a Boss CE3. I couldn't see their faces. I bought a CE3 shortly after. I had an original Roland Chorus, the big one, but rarely used it. The CE3 WAS his rig... the rest didn't matter.

I dunno, fellas. I was gother than any of y'all and my girlfriends were gother than me and we all liked Souxsie and Bauhaus and early Sisters of Mercy and stuff a lot more obscure, but not the Cure. Too bouncy & poppy. They were acceptable but not loved. Goth-lite, I would say.

Indeed, they are entry level Goth for sure. then you move to Bauhaus etc

Every pic I've ever seen looked like a CE-2 and many discussions on his rig revolve around the 2 but it doesnt matter he could have swapped many times -so point taken

-he usually has 5-6 pedals on stage, so I know you are being a bit hyperbolic, but yes Chorus was the fundamental effect.

Re: The Cure's Robert Smith's incredibly elaborate and custom guitar rig.

Nobody on Duncan cares about the Cure?

Well shove your JBs and your Invaders up your 80s Metal only butts. :lmao:

Only saw them once, in ‘89 with Love And Rockets and Pixies opening. Their best albums are Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography. Especially the B-sides that came out during that time.

Holy ****, just saw your post LOL.

I believe Smith used a Bass VI on Faith and Pornography. Definitely their best albums. Disintegration was a good come back album for them. Although I can’t stand Wild Mood Swings and everything after. Too poppy and weird.

Regarding Siouxsie: McGeoch was her best guitarist [emoji106]

I saw Siouxsie on the Hyaena tour, and was expecting Robert on guitar. But it was
John Valentine Carruthers, who was good. But I would have loved to have seen McGeoch.

I agree about the later “happy” Cure albums.

This is gold.

Re: The Cure's Robert Smith's incredibly elaborate and custom guitar rig.

Robert Smith has been dead for 20 years but nobody told him....

He looks like a dead bloated corpse & it’s kind of disgusting....

I dig the Cure, but I was thinking the same thing. He really does look like the walking (playing) dead in that top pic. Yikes!
