Thanks, I want a pup with more natural guitar tone. I have a ESP M-1 custom which is a bolt on and I do like the sh-5 bass, mids and highs

Re: The custom shop pickups

its hard to describe what natural tone is. everybody's definition of natural is different. even minute changes like string gauge and brand will change the guitar's natural tone.

that said, i reckon you should have an idea what kind of tone you are going for and the inherent tonal characteristic of your guitar. what i am saying is you should tailor your pickup choice to compensate or enhance your guitar's tonal signature to acheive the tone you hear in your head.

that is only the beginning. the guitar is only but a small factor in the tone equation. imo, the amp plays a far larger part in determining your tonal signature than the guitar and pickups itself. but each can't do without the other.

the classic scenario would be which will sound better? an expensive guitar with expensive pickups through a crap amp, or a crap guitar and pickups through a top of the range amp?

i am getting out of topic here, but i think you get the picture. let us know what kind of music you play, whose tone you like, wood your guitar is made of, what effects and amp, and forum bros will be better equipped to advice accordingly.

Re: The custom shop pickups

I have a 86 ESP M-1 custom and want a bridge pup to go with my style of playing which is the 80's & 90s hair metal. I'm not digging the seymour duncan or dimarzio's, the best out of the bunch for me out of the 2 would be the TB-5 SD custom. How are the SD custon shop pups. I have a rio grande BBQ in a esp ltd MH300 and its not bad but I want a pickup that will bring out more tone, I don't like EMG's at all, thats what I took out. The M-1 is a alder body and maple neck, rosewood fretboard. I will spend up to $150 max for a good pickup. Any ideas' that will make my splawn sing. Are the surreal pups from Voodoo amps something to look at. Or what. I would like to get close to the Lynch mop, older dokken,

What does "bring out more tone" mean? To be honest, I'm thinking the instrument is lacking the mojo.

Re: The custom shop pickups

For playing the music you just stated and tone you looking for, the Duncan Distortion or the floor model Custom. Either one of those two will get you in that ballpark.

Re: The custom shop pickups

If you know what you like about the custom and what you don´t like, then simply send teh CS an e-mail or call them and they will make proper recommendations for what to do on a CS pickup...

We can´t make recommendations based on such wonderfully empty words as "Better" or "more tone.... BTW, they probably can´t, either ;)

Re: The custom shop pickups

+1 on the Distortion. Lynch used a stock Duncan Distortion bridge. It sounds (to me) much better than the Custom for that style music. If by "more tone" you mean more mids, than the DD is the way to go. But if by "more tone" you mean great clean sounds, you'll need something else besides a ceramic pickup, probably Alnico V. (Think about it: how many Dokken songs have good *clean* electric guitar sounds? It's usually an acoustic guitar with the mids and bass stripped out. "Rain" by Lynch Mob has him using an SSL-1 in the neck position for cleans.)

But Dani's right; you haven't mentioned what amp you play through...it's vital to getting the Dokken tone that you have something with real tubes in it that responds like a Marshall. Fender-style amps aren't going to cut it, even with all the pedals in the world and the right pickups, IMHO. I have an all-tube Crate combo that works just fine (VFX5112).

And whatever you do, DON'T get the Screamin' Demon. It's something else entirely. I think it's named after the irate people who've actually installed it....:yell:

Hey bro, great to see you here!......

I do believe the SH6(Duncan Distortion) is what you're after.... every guitar I have....and that's a lot of them....all have SH6's. FWIW..... tone quest's are frustrating, hang in there!!!!

Re: The custom shop pickups

I've found the MJ wound versions of the stock pickups to be "better".

So an MJ wound version of the Custom 5, would probably be "better" than a regular one.

"Better" being: more texture, more complexity, etc.
