You don't have to spend much, they are pretty cheap. In fact, if you have a cheap compass, that will work just fine.

What about putting an Alnico 5 in the Custom? Anyone tried that?

Duncan sells that as their Custom 5 pickup.
All of the Custom series pickups are the same wind, just a different magnet

The Custom with an A5 is a Custom 5
The Custom with an A2 is a Custom Custom

The Custom must been the most mag-swapped p'up of the whole line, at the same level of the '59, because of their wind allowing it, making'em almost impossible to make'em sound bad, not even in purpose, with just about any alnico grade, from A2 to A9; they ALL sound good, if the context of use is respected.

The Custom 5 seems to excel at either really heavy music, or in really mid-heavy guitars (which is why it sounds great in one of my Music Mans).

I put a Custom in the bridge of my Les Paul and although I've used it with success in the past in this guitar the treble strings just sound brittle. I can't get that smooth, warm tone that I should be getting. Just tinny and brittle.

So I'm gonna try a pair of Dimarzio 36th Anniversary pickups.

Have you tried adjusting the height of the pickup and pole pieces ? What amp and speakers are you using and are they the same amp and speakers you've used with past Customs in your Les Paul ?
