the dean michael schenker set, revised.

I went to see michael schenker 3 days ago in Tilburg, Holland, and he just RIPPED THE SKIN OF MY EARS with sheer awesomeness. I've seen him 4 times before (fanboy alert) but this was his best show to date. The singer he chose, doobey white or something like that, was very good. the bass player was Francis Bucholz from the scorpions, and the drums was hermann rarebell, also scorps of the good ol days. His wingman was ofcourse Wayne Findley. Nice guy!

but ok, I saw his guitars up close and discovered that his neck pickup is supersuperhigh and the bridgepickup is SUPERlow. thats the only way I can explain him not having a disbalance of output of those 2 pickups cause the neckpickup 'feels' a lot weaker than the bridge when they're setup the same height from the strings. The bridgepickup needs to be set a whole lot lower than one's used to do. almost three times lower than I usually do, but that way is apparently the way Michael likes it. it gives me almost instantly that schenker-tone by the way. setup like a 'regular' pickup gives me something of a blend of a superdistortion and a JB ,but set up lower, it's more open, clearer, with more mids and looser lows. Both work, but I wish I could have it high again and have a neck pickup to match, haha.

To swap neck and bridge models around doesn't work that well, by the way. the neck pickup lacks balls. it's a really dedicated neckpickup in design and tone. super juicy and fat but with a stratty like clarity. It does NOT like to go coilsplit. It prefers parallel. You get strange cancellations if you split it. the bridgepickup doesnt have those issues, but is better in parallel too.

describe the bridge pup? what does it resemble a JB? a custom? a dim DSD?

Re: the dean michael schenker set, revised.

I would assume they are a Dean Schenker set. But perhaps not.

Re: the dean michael schenker set, revised.

Michael has Dean USA pickups in his guitars.

very cool! Id love to see him. Wayne findlay? where have I heard of him from???

Herman and Francis?? cool! Always wondered why Francis left the scorps?

Sorry, NO help to your question, but Gene already nailed it..

Re: the dean michael schenker set, revised.

I saw him a couple of month ago in a tiny ( may be 200 capacity! ) club in Portland Or. Man, was playin it hot! The loudest show I have ever been to.

Re: the dean michael schenker set, revised.

yeah I thought I said I have the Dean set, and michael uses them too...

they are a crossbreed between the JB and superdistortion. fatty with an edge, liquidy leads and chunky rhythm. if I set the pickup higher it becomes more 'JB' and lower more 'Superdistortion', if you will allow me to use a terrible comparison, haha.

The tone is very much his. that 'cocked wah' is really there. I can get very close to his old tone with a jazzN in the bridge of les paul with an alnico8 (or a V, whatever you like). and this is more like his modern tone.

The best pickup as a replacement is, and I hate to break it to you, the custom 8 for the bridge and the 59N a4 in the neck... it's weird, but true.those pickups are the best duncan-replacements for the dean set. strangely enough.

Re: the dean michael schenker set, revised.

oh damn, I posted this in the wrong subforum! sorry guys, this has to go to pickup lounge...

about Francis: he left because he didn't agree with the direction the band was turning. too poppy, too 90ies. but this show was kickass. You will all be able to relive the gig I went to because they were filming it for a DVD. and they said this show would be turned into a DVD, so... well you do the math :D

Francis left over business issues, he was at odds with Rudy, Klaus and Matthias.

If I'm not mistaken the vocalist is Dougie White, he used to be filling for YJM's Attack album. God how I love his vocal.
