The duncan custom is in my guitar and the verdict it

I really like this pup a LOT!
it has some JB like traits but is cleaner like my 81 and the custom seems to be much tighter and deeper(bassier?) than the JB?
I still love the JB in my one LP and it will remain there without a doubt
but the custom is a keeper as well in the other LP along with a 59 that i already had they make a real nice combo!

Glad you like it! I have the Rio BBQ in my Dean Evo but am thinking of going with a Custom/59 set as a change and maybe puting the Rios in my LP and replacing the Burstbucker Pros.

I figure my dean will either get a JB, Custom, or C-5.

Are the Custom/59 warm enough compared to the JB?

The Custom is great in a LP. good choice.

Very cool! I'm even more anxious to try it now...How high output is it? Hotter than a JB? More aggressive??

The Custom is tight, punchy and well balanced with moderate output. and it doesn't have that upper JB "spike" tone thing going on.

Ah alright. My problem with the JB was that it didn't have quite enough bass, and could've been tighter, but it actually wasn't aggressive enough for me.

yeah I would say the Custom has more bass than the JB and is slightly aggressive but not really aggressive like a distortion. You can't go wrong with a Custom imo.

I love how aggressive my DD is, maybe a Custom with an oversized Ceramic would be as aggressive, that would sound badass...

But I think an EMG Pa2 would make anything as aggressive as needed, with all the versatility of being able to turn it off.

output wise the custom sounds a bit more aggressive?
probably due to its ceramic magnet?
it for me has it all over the duncan distortion!
cleaner, tighter and it does not have that "boxy quality" the distortion did?

Re: The duncan custom is in my guitar and the verdict it

BTW, the JB sings much more for leads and the custom is tighter for leads.
i would say that the custom is tonally a cross between a 81 and the JB.
and once again for versitilty the JB remains the king :)

Re: The duncan custom is in my guitar and the verdict it

I stopped using duncans last month and went emgs in all my guitars but i still regret that i have never tried the Duncan Custom......it seemed like the best solution for the sound i am looking for(even though i am not sure if the output is in the range i prefer). I didn't like the CC, C5, DD, JB but the Custom seems to have all the qualities those pickups didn't have for me. Now i must buy a new guitar and put the Custom in it.

Re: The duncan custom is in my guitar and the verdict it

I recently swapped out the JB pickup on my guitar with a Custom as well. The Custom has a more aggressive edge to it with tighter, punchier lows. The output seems about the same as the JB, maybe a little hotter. For leads, I would say that the JB is a little smoother and "sings" better while the Custom has a tighter, more in your face type of sound. Both are great pickups. It really just depends on the sound you're looking for.

Re: The duncan custom is in my guitar and the verdict it

I think all the Custom series pickups are the best for LP's for heavy rock/metal.

C-5 tight powerful lows, neutral mids, open vintage sounding highs.
CC round bottom, low mid accentuation, creamier high end.
Custom chunky low end, plenty of harmonic content in the low an high mids, crunchy highs. Doesn't clean up quite as well as the other two, but is best for metal, whereas the others excel for hard rock.

I used Custom with my Gibson Explorer.. with PG neck... thats incredible... I think its the best made pickup for Mahagony wood

Re: The duncan custom is in my guitar and the verdict it

I'm waiting to get a Custom installed in my Epi Les Paul. I'm not too sure about my Neck Pickup though, either a '59 or Jazz. I'v just bought the '59 but have decided on changing it to a Jazz. How do you find the Custom/59 combo? Anyone know if a Custom/Jazz would be better?

Re: The duncan custom is in my guitar and the verdict it

I prefer the tone of the Jazz to the 59, especially in the neck. The best neck pup is the root of the most insanity on the forum!

I am surprised you guys don't find the Custom warm and thick for leads! Anyway......I think the CC sound sgood in an LP for a hot and creamy vintage tone that will do clean to heavy. I heard it in a friend's LP.

Custom/59 combo would work good depending what you want from 59 :) But in my opinion i would put Pearly Gates or 59...

Jazz neck i played for a while with a JB in bridge.. They sounded great together.. Custom is some deeper than JB
i asked to a local dealer and there i met with PG neck which was on a Gibson Les Paul Studio.. and i got it immediately..

Try them with other guitars if you can.. before u buy

Well thing is i'd be happy enough to install my '59 in my Les Paul but have been reading a lot of reviews and people's opinions about the '59 being to bassy and muddy with distortion. Thats why i'm tempted to go for th Jazz now. I play mainly rock and metal and use the neck pickup mainly for cleans or solo's and lead work.
